JANET IP service• High Quality

• Reliability, Availability, Resilience, Capacity

• National & Regional infrastructures are multiply connected• Can tolerate failures without service disruption• Option at organisation level (chargeable)

• High Capacity• 40Gbit/sec core – 100Gbit/s planned in parts• Universities typically connect at 1Gbit/sec or more

• Well connected nationally & internationally to commercial and other Research and Education networks

JANET Lightpath

Copyright JNT Association 2010 JISC Future of Research Conference – 19th October 2010 10

JANET Lightpath• Dedicated network capacity for demanding

projects• Typically high capacity point-to-point network

connections• Separate to standard JANET IP service• Mutual isolation of services – prevents

disruption• Enable national and international

collaboration where this type of service is needed

Videoconferencing Benefits• More efficient and effective

collaboration and interaction• Increase scope for national and

international collaboration• Reduce travel time and cost• Contribute to greater energy efficiency

(carbon footprint)• Complements face-to-face meetings

and interaction

Videoconferencing uses

• Meetings

• Teaching & Learning

• Interviews

• Research Collaboration

• Support for live events and conferences

JANET Videoconferencing• Centrally managed service• Book & schedule meetings & conferences• Endpoint registration

• A/V suites, individual desktops

• Quality assurance• periodic endpoint tests – Audio, Video

• Supports• mediation between multiple technologies

• H.323, H.320, SIP, AccessGRID, Evo, Cisco Telepresence

• High Definition Video (HD)

• Session recording and streaming

• Desktop to desktop “on-demand” (no prior booking)

Eduroam

Copyright JNT Association 2010 JISC Future of Research Conference – 19th October 2010 20

Eduroam• Roaming – obtaining network access at visited

locations• Typically wireless access (but can be wired)• Laptop, smart-phone, net-book…

• Visitors get easy, authenticated access on your campus.• No need for special guest accounts

• Your staff and students get the same when they visit other campuses

• Easy to keep connected and communicating for study, collaboration etc

Supporting Eduroam• Both sites must support the service

• Provide an identity service for their own staff• Provide a referral service to allow visitors identities

to be checked with their home site

• Support and advice is available• Some organisations are now considering

making all campus wireless access via eduroam – one service for both staff and visitors

• See it in action on the JANET stand

UK Access Management Federation

• JISC & BECTA provide the service

• JANET(UK) is Federation Operator

• Aim: Simplify access to resources• Staff, Students• Avoid multiple account, identities and

passwords• “single sign-on” – one identity and

password• Web based mechanism

UK federation• Organisation

• Registers people• Implements “identity provision” service

• Service provider• Access to resources• Identity checking function

• Central Infrastructure/service• Mediates interactions between parties• End-users, Identity providers, Service providers

• Developments in hand to take this concept beyond just web-based applications and resources

Summary• JANET provides a pervasive, high-quality,

high-capacity network• JANET IP service• JANET Lightpath

• Videoconferencing services• Roaming• UK Access Management Federation• All these contribute in their own way to

organisations’ efficiency and effectiveness

• Looking ahead…
