1 Jacksonville Elementary Parent Handbook / 2016 2017
Hello Jacksonville Parents and Welcome!
I am hopeful that you have had a fantastic summer and that your students are rested, energized, and
excited to begin school. Whether your child is new to Jacksonville Elementary or is a returning student, we
ask that you please review the information within this handbook with your student. In this handbook you
will find useful information about Jacksonville Elementary School including: Our Mission and Belief
Statement, daily class schedule, calendar of evening events for the 2016-2017 school year, and behavioral
guidelines which promote a positive school culture of respect and safety.
Parents and guardians, we recognize the tremendous role you play as an active partner in your child’s
schooling. As such, effective communication is critical. Please communicate directly with your child’s
teacher, any specific learning needs that our staff should be aware of. Throughout the year, feel free to let us
know when things are going well or if any concerns should arise that need to be addressed. We will work
collaboratively with you in these instances, to come up with the best solution to remedy the concern. Thank
you for your vested interest in the education of your child. Parents we appreciate your support and we look
forward to working with your student(s)!
In the latter half of this handbook you will find detailed information concerning school wide
behavioral expectations. In order to create a positive and productive learning environment for everyone,
students will consistently practice safe, respectful and responsible behaviors at all times. Staff will clearly
teach a set of building wide expectations at the beginning of the year and revisit these expectations often.
These expectations will be consistently enforced throughout all common areas on campus by all staff. Staff
will proactively work with students, acknowledging them for making the right choice, as well as re-teaching
students if they should choose otherwise. The end goal is for students to understand that they are
accountable for their actions, and that their actions may either positively or negatively impact others.
Lastly, I wanted to communicate how extremely proud I am to be the new principal at Jacksonville
Elementary School. As you are well aware, Jacksonville has a long standing tradition of excellence! We
have great students, supportive parents, an engaged community, as well as a terrific staff consisting of both
licensed and classified individuals, who genuinely care about kids. Jacksonville Elementary is truly a
remarkable place!
Parents, as the school year begins, I wanted to focus our attention on the Mission and Belief
Statement of our school which reads the following: It is the mission of Jacksonville School to provide a
positive environment which promotes responsible, resourceful, and respectful individuals inspired with a
lifelong love of learning. This is at the heart of what we do and it is our commitment to students. It is going
to be a great year! I cannot wait to work with these terrific kids. Parents, should you have any questions or
concerns, please feel free to visit with me.
Sincerely,
Fred Kondziela
Principal
Jacksonville Elementary School

Positive Behavior Interventions and Support To Jacksonville Students:
You are very special to us. We want you to be happy at school and to learn all that you
possibly can. Our school uses positive behavior interventions and support (PBIS) to help
us maintain an efficient and orderly school. We have identified three rules that will help us
all be successful:
Be Safe - We want our school to be a place of utmost safety, both physically and
emotionally. Students should be able to come to school free from worry that they might be
injured, mistreated, bullied, or taunted by others. Please act safely in each and every
situation so that our school will continue to be an incredible place to learn and grow.
Be Respectful - Treating everyone with dignity and respect includes following directions,
being polite, treating people the way you would like to be treated, and accepting differences
between and among people.
Be Responsible - All through your life you must decide how you will act. Therefore, we
expect you to do what is right whether anyone is watching you or not. This is called “being
responsible.” It isn’t always easy to make responsible choices, especially if someone else
is not being responsible. It is important for you to remember that you are in charge of
yourself. You are expected to do your best and take responsibility for your actions. You
can do what is right!
The adults at Jacksonville Elementary will help you achieve success at school. We will do
this by helping you solve problems and by protecting your right to learn. We look forward to
a good year, and are happy to have an opportunity to work with you.
SCHOOL RULES
In addition to our three rules, it is necessary to have rules for appropriate behavior in the
common areas of the school. Teachers will help students learn these rules.
We hope that parents take time to review school rules as well. When parents and their
children discuss these rules, everyone has a clearer understanding of school expectations.
8 Jacksonville Elementary Parent Handbook / 2016 2017
Playground Our school playground is a place where students learn to be respectful of one another, to play in a safe manner and to problem solve. Students on the playground are expected to be respectful to peers and adults, use all equipment in a safe manner and follow applicable school rules including but not limited to the following guidelines:
General 1. Students will walk to and from recess holding onto all play equipment. 2. Students must have a pass to re-enter the building. 3. Students are allowed to eat snacks on the wall when authorized by their teacher or the
playground monitor. 4. Students will respect the personal space of others. Wrestling or play fighting is not allowed. 5. School-wide game rules will be followed. 6. Students are not allowed to throw any objects except playground balls. 7. Students may use play equipment from home that is similar in nature to school equipment.
Names must be on all personal items. 8. When the bell rings, students are to immediately stop what they are doing and line up quickly
and quietly.
Blacktop 1. Basketball and tetherball courts will be assigned by grade or skill. 2. Balls can be hit on backboards only, not on walls. 3. Jump ropes are to be used for jumping only. Field 1. Students must remain visible to monitors. (Not in bushes, ditches
or the breezeway.) 2. The field may be closed during especially wet or muddy days. 3. Tackle football is not allowed. Equipment 1. Students may not run, chase or play tag on equipment. 2. Students must slide with bottoms down, feet first, one at a time. 3. Students will wait in a safe area by poles if swings are in use. (Count to 100 out loud to get
your turn.) 4. Due to safety concerns, students are only allowed to swing sitting upright. Jumping off is not
allowed. 5. Sit and Spin: One person allowed at a time. The person on the equipment must spin
themselves. (Count to 30 out loud then the next student in line takes a turn. 6. Tire Swing: Limit of 2 students at a time (4th -6th) or 3 (K-3) on swing at one time. Students
must sit up with legs inside and body up. (Count to 100, next students in line take their turn.)
CONCERNS: If playground aides are not able to control students in line, teachers will be asked to walk out to the playground area to retrieve their students from recess.

9 Jacksonville Elementary Parent Handbook / 2016 2017
HALLWAYS Goal: The hallways of Jacksonville Elementary will be safe and quiet environment where people interact with courtesy and respect. Responsible Hallway Behavior: Students will move safely and responsibly through the hallways. Appropriate speaking voices will be used in the hallway. If someone is too far away to hear, move close enough to speak in a normal voice. During class time, students must have a designated pass to be in the hallways (e.g. library, bathroom, office). If an adult requests that you correct a behavior, do what the adult asks you to do. No students should be in the hallways prior to the first bell unless they are with a staff member or parent (Safety Patrol members excluded.) After dismissal from class, students should leave the building through their designated exit, (other than the front door) and then go to their designated destination. Students should pick up all materials from hallway if they have been using hallway as work area. “Universal” Passes will be developed for telephone, boy & girl bathroom, media/library, office, computer lab and health room for student use. Consequences for Infractions When a student misbehaves, calmly and consistently implement the mildest consequences that might be appropriate. Verbal or nonverbal reprimand Positive practice – for example, have the student go back and walk. Have the student practice the responsible hallway behavior for several minutes. Briefly delay the student. Return the student to the homeroom teacher for consequences. Encouragement Procedures Staff will consistently encourage responsible behavior through positive interactions: Initiate friendly interactions with students. Compliment individual students on their safety, courtesy, and respect. Compliment a teacher (so students can hear) citing examples of individual or class-wide responsibility. Write a compliment to a teacher on the class’ responsible behavior. Teachers should discuss the compliment with the class and post the note so students can see it. Supervision Responsibilities of Staff Teachers are responsible to teach appropriate hallway behavior. Each teacher is responsible for monitoring their own class while they are in the hallways. Teachers will be responsible for escorting their classes to and from all out of classroom activities and to and from the dismissal area after school. All staff will assist in monitoring the hallways and act upon inappropriate behavior. Teaching Responsibilities At the beginning of each school year, there will be a short lesson on hallway expectations in each classroom. These lessons should be conducted in a way that helps students understand why
10 Jacksonville Elementary Parent Handbook / 2016 2017
procedures have been implemented (i.e. safety, respect, setting a calm tone for entering class, etc.). Lessons should be presented in a way that implies staff and students will work together. Primary teachers will also take students into the hallways to practice appropriate procedures. Intermediate teachers will have their classes practice as needed.
ASSEMBLIES Goal: Jacksonville students will demonstrate respectful behavior during assemblies by sitting so others can see, listening, participating, following directions and applauding politely. Responsible Assembly Behavior Students will enter and exit the gym in a quiet and orderly manner. Primary uses breezeway door to enter and exit. Intermediate uses South (south parking lot) door to enter and exit. When the leader raises their hand and says, “Give me 5,” stop talking and look at the person. Listen and watch carefully during the assembly. Applaud politely to show appreciation; do not boo, whistle, yell or stomp your feet. Students will remain seated during the assembly. At the end of the assembly, students will remain seated and leave the bleachers one class at a time. Floor leaves first then first row, closest to the door, unloading until the top is reached. Encouragement Procedures If the student body was respectful and followed the rules, the principal and/or teacher will verbally praise the appropriate assembly behavior during the closing comments. After the class returns to their classroom, teachers should give positive feedback to students who followed the rules. Compliments given to the student body by a performer will be shared with the students in an appropriate manner. Consequences for Infractions When a student misbehaves staff will calmly and consistently implement the mildest consequence that is appropriate. Non-verbal warning A quiet, proximate verbal warning Move the child to another location in the assembly area. Quietly remove the student from the assembly area and escort to the office. Teaching Responsibilities Every classroom teacher will teach assembly behavior. Prior to each assembly, teachers will review the assembly rules. If appropriate, practice how to show appreciation. At the first assembly of the year, appropriate behavior will be taught with examples. All classroom teachers will have a follow-up lesson or discussion shortly after the assembly to discuss the content of the assembly, when appropriate. After each assembly, teachers will discuss student behavior at the assembly with their class. Teachers will praise appropriate student behavior and discuss ways to improve inappropriate behavior.
11 Jacksonville Elementary Parent Handbook / 2016 2017
Supervision Responsibilities All teachers must attend every assembly. Classroom teachers must attend and sit with their classes. All specialists and classified staff should be distributed throughout the audience to assist the classroom teachers with supervision, when possible. Model appropriate behavior for your students – no talking while the assembly is in progress, clap at appropriate times and so on. If a student is misbehaving, give a non-verbal warning. If necessary, go to the student and give a verbal warning. Try to be as unobtrusive as possible. Quietly move the student to another seating area. If a student needs to be removed from the assembly, escort the student to the office.
RESTROOMS Goal: The restrooms at Jacksonville Elementary will be clean and safe. Responsible Restroom Behavior: Use restrooms appropriately and leave them clean. Put toilet paper in the toilet. Put all other paper in the garbage can. Flush the toilet/urinal when finished. Wash your hands. Leave the restroom immediately after you finish. Encouragement Procedures Teachers will periodically discuss the importance of responsible behavior, and will encourage students to continue to be responsible in managing their own behavior in restrooms. Staff will provide positive feedback to teachers and students for keeping the restrooms neat. When a student misbehaves, calmly and consistently implement the mildest consequence that might be appropriate. Verbal reprimand Inform the student’s classroom teacher. Parent notification Detention to clean the restroom Direct supervision of every restroom visit for one week Principal referral for insubordination, dangerous behavior, or destructive acts Supervision Responsibilities of Staff: When dismissing students for recess, remind them to use the restroom before returning to class Remind students that “Restrooms will be clean and safe.” If a student violates a rule, use a respectful but firm voice to inform the student of what she/he should be doing. For any repeated infractions, have the student call the parent to notify them of what s/he did and that she/he will be staying after school or using recess time to assist in cleaning the restroom. Teaching Responsibilities: At the beginning of each new school year and after each long vacation, there will be a short lesson on proper use of restrooms. The rules specified above can serve as the basis for this short lesson. Teachers will be responsible for teaching any new students the rules and expectations.
12 Jacksonville Elementary Parent Handbook / 2016 2017
During the first week of each new school year, plan on walking students to restrooms at the beginning of each recess and state the restroom goal before students enter. Stand outside restroom doorways during your class’ use. Plan on entering the restroom at least once each day. Note positive things to reinforce and areas to be improved. Discuss this information with the class. Reteach and/or practice throughout the year as necessary.
CAFETERIA RULES Goal: Students will be respectful at their table.
They will: * talk quietly * keep hands to themselves * respect the space of other students. 2. Students will “Give Five” and stop talking when lights are out. 3. Students will clean up their area when dismissed. They will: * throw trash away carefully * stack trays neatly. 4. Students will only eat their own food.
BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL Goal: Students will follow all district policies and procedures so that they are safe, respectful and responsible at all times. Student will arrive at and depart from school in a safe, timely, and orderly manner. Students should arrive at school no earlier than 7:30 a.m. Once on campus, students who are eating breakfast must proceed to the cafeteria. Breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. Students who are not eating breakfast at school are to immediately proceed to the track until the bell rings to line up and go to their classroom. At 7:50 a.m., students should enter the building through their designed door and go directly to their classroom. There is to be no loitering in hallways, in front of school, on the playground, or at safety patrol posts. Students who are on Safety Patrol are NOT allowed to bring their friends with them while on duty. Students should not be in the building prior to 7:50 unless accompanied by an adult. (Safety Patrol is an exception.) Parents who bring their child into the building prior to the bell, do not have to sign in at the office and get a visitor sticker. Once the bell has rung, parents must sign in and get a visitor sticker before they can escort their child to class.
13 Jacksonville Elementary Parent Handbook / 2016 2017
Parent, teacher or office notes must be shown to the bus duty attending adult to sign if there is any change in the student’s usual routine. It is the parents’ responsibility to inform the office of changes in their child’s after school destination. If there is not a note or telephone call giving parental permission for the student to change the usual routine, the students will be sent to their normal destination.
ENCOURAGING POSITIVE BEHAVIOR
Goal: Responsible behavior will be encouraged as teachers focus on interacting more frequently with each student when the student is behaving appropriately than when the students is misbehaving. A teacher or other adult may acknowledge a student or group in a more structured manner. Suggestions include, but are not limited to, the following: Verbal praise for successful and mature behavior Written feedback to a student (Note, postcard, Gold Nugget, etc.). Written feedback to parent(s)/guardian (Note home, postcard, etc.). Certificate of merit Call the student and/or parents at home. Give the student an additional responsibility. Let the class have five minutes at the end of the class period as choice time. Allow (appropriate) music to be played during an independent work period. Compliment the student in front of another adult. Ask the principal or another adult to tell the student you mentioned how well the student is doing. Refer student to the principal for recognition. Gold Nugget card Lunch with the teacher or principal CORRECTING UNSAFE BEHAVIOR Goal: To create a learning environment in which all students achieve their highest level of success and to assist all students with positive proactive interactions Consequences for misbehavior are to be implemented consistently and calmly. Students will be taught that certain behaviors are unacceptable and will lead to consequences. Consequences that can be used by teachers include the following: Quiet verbal prompt Keep a student in from recess. In-class time out Parent contact/conference Assigned seating. “Oops” Form as a reminder. Send to a Buddy Room for time out. Behavior contract In-school Suspension After school detention (intermediate students) with 24-hour notice Out of School Suspension for 1) Fighting, 2) Racial/sexual harassment, 3) Extreme defiance, 4) Behaviors jeopardizing the safety of students and staff.
