Example of Self Instruction to Deal with Anger
(The student picked out/made up statements to say to himself when he began to get angry. These were typed and made into a laminated bookmark that he kept with him at all times.)
What To Do When I Get Mad:
I’m upset, but I can handle this. Try not to take this too seriously.
Take a deep breath. There’s no point in getting mad.
My muscles are getting tight and my face is hot, but I’m not going haywire.
Shake it off. Don’t take it personal.
I handled that one pretty well.
