J-ESS Tutorial – Change Tax Data

For federal, enter the total number of allowances you would like to claim, any additional amount you would like withheld from each paycheck (if desired) and marital status. Marital status, in this case, only determines which tax chart will be used to calculate your taxes. See next slide for additional information.For state, enter the total number of SWT (State Withholding Tax for Virginia) allowances and any additional amount you would like withheld from each paycheck, if desired.Click Submit

J-ESS Tutorial – Marital Status

Married individuals who wish to have more income tax withheld from their pay may choose the marital status of “Single” and also click the box that reads “Check here and select single status if married but withholding at single rate.” Please note that if you choose the marital status of “Married” and also click the box, the system will calculate your taxes as if you’d selected “Single.”

J-ESS Tutorial – Verify Identity

Your User ID is pre-populated, but you must enter your JMU e-ID password.

NoteNote: After clicking Submit on the Tax Information page, you will see the Verify Identity page. This re-identification serves as your electronic signature, verifying that you acknowledge the changes you’ve just made to your tax withholding and providing further security.

Once you have entered your password, click the Continue button.

NoteNote: After clicking Continue on the Verify Identity page, you will see this Confirmation page. Click OK to complete your transaction.

NoteNote: You cannot make changes to this screen as it is view only. If you wish to make another change you must go out of this page by clicking on “Go back to Payroll, Compensation & Leave” or “Go back to J-Ess Main Page” and then click on the W-4/VA-4 Tax Information link again.

NoteNote: After clicking OK on the Confirmation page, you will be returned to the W-4/VA-4 tax information screen where you can view your change, return to Payroll, Compensation & Leave or Go Back to J-Ess Main Page.

If you wish to claim exemption for either federal or state, you will need to submit paper forms to the Payroll Services office. You can access and download the paper forms via this link.

Note: Note: If your status is currently exempt and you wish to start having taxes withheld, you can make that change here. Please see the next slides for details.

If your status is currently exempt on both Federal and State, your tax information screen will look like this.

If your status is currently exempt on State only, your tax information screen will look like this.

J-ESS Tutorial – Change from Tax Exempt

If you wish to change from being exempt to having taxes withheld, check the appropriate box beside the statement to remove exemption from federal and/or state taxes.

For federal, you will need to choose the appropriate marital status as well as enter the number of allowances you wish to claim and any additional amount.

For state, you simply need to enter the number of allowances you wish to claim and any additional amount. Click Submit
