What gives Italy its sense of identity?

Italy is a peninsula that stretches out

into the Mediterranean.

A peninsula is a piece of land

surrounded by the sea on 3 sides.

In the north of the country are

Europe’s highest mountains.

Most of Italy is mountainous.

It also has 2 famous

volcanoes…Etna & Vesuvius.

Here is a physical map of Italy. On the next slide is a blank map and a list of features you have to label. You can use this map

to help you as well as your own research.

Label;• Mediterranean Sea• Adriatic Sea • Mt Etna • Mt Vesuvius • Rome • Apennines • River Po • River Arno • River Tiber • Milan • Venice • Dolomites • Alps • Sicily • Sardinia

• Your map should be

coloured green• Mountainous areas should be coloured brown

• Rivers coloured blue

F The physical geography of Italy

• Italy has a number of volcanoes – some more active than others. 1. Find out the heights on the 3 biggest volcanoes in Italy 2. Which three Italian volcanoes have erupted most recently?

• Italy has Europe’s only active volcanoes and eruptions happen every year.3. Why does Italy have volcanoes?

Mount Etna has been erupting for a very long time. 4. Create a fact file on the volcano including information about the effects of its most violent eruption. Why it has been erupting for such a long time, and why people continue to live there? Include maps/ photos/ diagrams.

GVenice is a very unique city in Italy. I want you to do some research and make a fact file on Venice. Try to find as many interesting facts as you can.

It needs to include; • Location• Population• Weather• When was Venice built? • How many canals? • How where they able to build structures on top of the water? • Things to do and visit in Venice• What is the future of Venice? – some scientists believe that Venice could be

completely submerged under water some day. • By how much is Venice sinking every year?
