AT TIDBITS® WE’RE NUTS ABOUT
CHESTNUTSby Patricia L. Cook
The lyrics of a favorite Christmas carol say, “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire.” Let’s explore some interesting Tidbits about chestnuts, the subtly sweet, healthy nuts. • American chestnut trees were the dominant hardwood trees for food and timber in the Appalachian Mountains several hundred years ago. When Chinese chestnut trees were imported, a bark fungus came with them for which the American species had no resistance. The American chestnut died off; over 30 million acres (12 million ha) died from Maine to Georgia and west to the Ohio Valley from what was known as the chestnut blight. The death of these trees was one of the largest ecological disasters in America. • Back in the heyday of American chestnuts, they were an important food for people and wildlife from birds to bears. Rural communities depended on the nuts as a cash crop for feeding livestock, and the sale of lumber was also important for rural economics. Another chestnut product was tannin, a chemical substance found in some plants that is used in the leather tanning industry. • The loss of the chestnut industry cost rural communities millions of dollars. Scientists have been working to restore the species.

25+ Years ExperienceCHESTNUTS (continued):• James Carpentar of Salem, Ohio, a member of the Northern Nut Growers Association (NNGA), discovered a large living American chestnut in the midst of a grove of dead trees in the early 1950s. The tree showed no sign of blight infection. Carpentar and Dr. Robert T. Dunstan, another member of the NNGA and a well-known plant breeder in Greensboro, North Carolina, conducted research, grafting and cross-pollinating chestnut trees. They cross-pollinated grafts from the strong American chestnut with a mixture of three United States Department of Agriculture-released Chinese chestnut varieties. After years of work, Dunstan Hybrid Chestnuts were developed. They have a combination of American and Chinese traits. The first chestnuts to ever receive a U.S. Plant Patent, the Dunstan trees are healthy, vigorous trees that bear heavy annual crops of large, sweet-tasting nuts.• The grandson of Dr. Dunstan, R.D. Wallace, and his wife, Deborah A. Gaw, started Chestnut Hill Tree Farm in 1981 in Alachua, Florida. Dunstan Chestnuts are the most widely planted chestnut variety, and Chestnut Hill is a national leader in the chestnut industry. • The American Chestnut Foundation, started by plant scientists in 1983, is also working to reestablish American chestnut trees. They have worked to breed blight-resistant trees, while maintaining the characteristics of the original trees. The successful program has resulted in trees that retain “no Chinese characteristics other than blight resistance.”• Canadian scientists and naturalists established the Canadian Chestnut Council in 1988 to work on reestablishing the trees in Canada as well, mainly in Ontario. • There are fewer than 2,500 acres (1,012 ha) of chestnut orchards in the United States. We import $20 million of chestnuts annually. Our consumption of chestnuts is very low compared to Europe, Asia and Africa. Most chestnuts are imported from Japan, China, Spain and Italy.• Chestnuts are used as a potato substitute frequently in Europe, Asia and Africa. The nuts actually contain twice as much starch as potatoes. They are also similar to brown rice in their nutritional value and sometimes called a “grain that grows on a tree.” They are 40 percent carbohydrates and only 2-3 percent fat, compared to many nuts that contain 50 percent fat. They contain 5-10 percent high quality protein and no cholesterol. • In some European countries, Catholics give chestnuts to the poor on the Feast of Saint Martin in November. Also, chestnuts are eaten as a

We don’t think of our cats as “captive” animals, but in truth they are. Indoor-only cats are captive in our homes and can become bored, leading to “sickness behaviors.” How do you know your cat is bored? Inappropriate litterbox behaviors, aggression, decreased food or water intake, vomiting/diarrhea, lethargy and changes in general grooming CAN be signs of sickness behaviors due to the stress of captivity.
If your cat is experiencing any of these behaviors, Cat Specialist can help you determine whether they are due to a medical condition. If your cat is medically sound, we are always available to talk feline enrichment with you. From cat trees to toys, there are many different smells and sounds that can break up the kitty doldrums!

When a Cough is a ‘True’ Cough in a Cat
Cats vomit, retch, gag, sneeze, have nasal congestion, trouble breathing, reverse sneeze but rarely do they have a ‘true’ cough. Upper respiratory infections are the most common respiratory signs seen: showing eye discharge, nasal discharge, mouth ulcers, open mouth breathing, decreased appetite and fever. Vomiting and retching related to diet/gastrointestinal illness can be confused with respiratory problems. Mixed signs are common so cats may show many different clinical presentations.
The top two causes of cough in Colorado are Asthma/Bronchitis Complex and Heartworm Disease.
Asthma/Bronchitis Complex is an allergic lung disease that causes constriction of the bronchial tree. Diagnosis in the cat is made by clinical exam, chest x-rays, tracheal wash/cytology and response to therapy. Coughing is the primary clinical sign followed by an expiratory dyspnea, crackles and wheezing. Secondary cigarette smoke is commonly noted in the history of asthmatic patients.
Heartworm Disease is on the rise in Colorado. The dog and the coyote are the reservoir for the infection. The mosquito bites an infected dog/coyote; the mosquito becomes infected; and then it bites another animal (dog, cat, bear, etc.); and the infective larva develops in the host animal; and finally the larva develops into an adult heartworm. Cats usually only have 1-3 worms living in the heart or the vessels of the lung. Diagnosis is made with a combination of blood tests, clinical signs, chest radiographs and chest ultrasounds. Even with this small number of worms many cats to die suddenly. There is no effective treatment once the worms are present except supportive care and the control of secondary side-effects due to the disease. Prevention is the only way to protect your cat from heartworm disease!
Other less common causes of cough in the cat are: heart disease (uncommon), tracheobronchial collapse (rare), grass awns/foreign bodies/fumes/smoke (can be seen), cancer (can be seen), infectious (less common), immune (can be seen) and laryngitis (less common).
Do not wait. Cats that are coughing need to be examined by a veterinarian to determine the cause and to get a plan for effective treatment.

traditional food on Saint Simon’s Day in Tuscany, Italy. • Chestnuts are excellent steamed or roasted. They are often included in dressing with turkey for holiday meals and are a great addition to soups and stews. Chestnuts can be ground into flour and used for baking pastries and bread. A traditional European dessert, “Mont Blanc,” has chestnuts sweetened with honey and topped with whipped cream. Also, a few beer brewers are now producing gluten-free chestnut beer.
• One of the largest chestnut forests in the world is on the French island of Corsica. In the 16th century, landowners were ordered to plant four trees each year in an eastern mountainous area of the island. The town of Castagniccia, which means chestnut grove, became forested with magnificent chestnut trees. Today, that forest is dying from neglect.
• Tourists and locals walking the streets of Beijing and other Chinese cities are likely to find chestnuts being roasted and sold by street vendors. About 40 percent of the world’s chestnuts are consumed in China. They roast them in ovens, on coals or even in hot sand. They also simmer them in numerous dishes and add them to soups.
• American chestnut wood is straight-grained, easily workable, lightweight and highly rot-resistant. It is used for railroad ties, fence posts, barn beams and home construction, as well as for musical instruments and fine furniture. Healthy chestnut trees grow straight and tall, often not producing branches until around 50 feet (15 m). The trees are known for being used “from cradle to coffin.”• A famous piece of chestnut furniture is an armchair on display at the Longfellow National Historic Site, operated by the National Park Service, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The chair was a gift to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, one of the most widely read American poets of all time, from Cambridge children for his 72nd birthday. The chair was built from wood from the “spreading chestnut tree,” written about by Longfellow in “The Village Blacksmith.” The tree in the poem, that he and many others loved, was removed in 1876 in order to widen Brattle Street in Cambridge. • There are chestnut trees around still today, and restoration efforts are ongoing to return the American chestnut trees to their majestic glory. There are growers selling chestnuts in the fall, mostly blight resistant Chinese varieties. It is hoped that someday soon, there will be more healthy chestnut forests of the American variety that produce chestnuts for us to “roast on an open fire.”

This week’s gem may introduce a new word to your vocabulary: pleochroic. Pleochroic is gemstonespeak for “shows different colors in different directions.” Andalusite is pleochroic – so the goal of the gem-cutter is to shape a stone so it gains a pleasing mix of colors: orange-brown and a yellowish green or gold. When successful, andalusite takes on a unique look dissimilar to any other gemstone. A well-cut andalusite will reveal patterns of dancing colors through the facets. It seems to work best when the gem is cut into a rectan-gular shape – like a cushion; then the color play is wonderful. If you like earth tones you’ll love andalu-site. If you prefer affordable gemstones, that’s another reason to consider andalusite. It is a gemstone that seems to attract the attention of men. Perhaps because it is durable and affordable! Andalusite was first discovered in Andalu-sia, a province of Spain, that’s how it got its unusual name. Today andalusite can be found in Brazil and Sri Lanka and maybe even at YOUR local jewelry store.

Your Home is SOLD in 45 Days Guaranteed, or, I’ll Buy It
While every agent will promise to sell your home, the reality in the real estate market today is that this simply doesn’t always happen. The truth of the matter is, many of the homes listed for sale sit on the market for months, and some of these homes never sell at all. Needless to say, this is highly frustrating to a home seller like you. But more than this, it can be financially crushing if you’re counting on the sale of your home to fulfill some other obligation. Well, the Wise Listing Team sets itself apart from most agents by being accountable to you. In other words, we don’t just promise to sell your home, we GUARANTEE it. Our 45 day home sale guarantee is simple: I promise to sell you’re your home within 45 days or I’ll buy it. Instead of making you empty promises, we give you a written GUARANTEE of performance and if we don’t live up to this agreement, fire us and pay nothing!24 hr FREE recorded message 1-888-267-4823 enter ID#2 or visit www.45daysSOLD.com

Most Tax Credits for Green Home Im-provements to Expire Soon!
Federal tax credits for most energy-efficient home im-provements are set to expire at the end of 2011. Experts say they won’t be extended. Purchase and installation must be this year, so you need to start projects no later than October or November.
Products and projects that qualify for the federal tax credit may be found at:http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=tax_credits.tx_indexRebates and tax credits are also offered by states and these incentives can be searched at:http://www.dsireusa.org
The maximum federal tax credit is $500 and the amount varies depending on the product. But tax credits are of-ten better than deductions, which only reduce your tax-able income. Tax credits reduce your total tax liability, so it’s like getting money back from the IRS.
Plus, energy-efficient upgrades save you money year af-ter year. Insulation can reduce air leakage 20% to 30%, saving about $220 a year. New windows can save up to $500 a year. A new air conditioner is typically 30% more efficient than a 10-year-old one. New ductwork, central air cooling and water heaters are also very cost-effective improvements.
For bigger green projects, federal tax breaks are avail-able until 2016! Examples include solar energy systems, geothermal heat pumps, small wind turbines and fuel cells. These may earn a tax credit worth up to 30% of the cost, with no dollar limit. For more information, check the Energy Star website: http://www.energystar.gov/in-dex.cfm?c=tax_credits.tx_index
Check the websites above for eligible projects. And al-ways consult with a tax professional before proceeding with expenditures that have tax implications.

Why is Brushing With Toothpaste Im-portant?
Brushing with toothpaste is important for several reasons. First and foremost, a toothpaste and a correct brushing action work to remove plaque, a sticky, harmful film of bacteria that grows on your teeth that causes cavities, gum disease and even-tual tooth loss if not controlled. Second, tooth-paste contains fluo-ride, which makes the entire tooth struc-ture more resistant to decay and promotes reminera l i za t ion , which aids in repair-ing early decay be-fore the damage can even be seen. Third, special ingredients in toothpaste help to clean and polish the teeth and remove stains over time. Fourth, toothpastes help freshen breath and leave your mouth with a clean feeling.
Is brushing with toothpaste enough to fight cavities and gum disease?
No. Although brushing thoroughly after each meal helps, flossing your teeth every day to re-move plaque and food particles between teeth and at the gumline is just as important. Studies show that plaque will regrow on teeth that are complete-ly clean within three to four hours of brushing.

Talk to Your Children (and Parents) about Shared Fi-
nancial Picture It’s Thanksgiving week. And if you’re fortunate, you can look around your Thanksgiving table and see several generations of your family. Of course, as you know, many types of cohesiveness are in-volved in knitting a family together.
But one connection that frequently gets ignored, at least in terms of family dialogue, is the financial linkage between parents and their children on one hand, and these same parents and their parents on the other. So if you find your-self in this “sandwich” group, it may be worth considering your financial position.
If your children are very young, you might want to start by emphasizing the importance of three separate concepts: saving, spending and sharing. If you give them an allow-ance, or if you pay them to do some minor tasks around the household, you can encourage them to put the money in three separate containers. The “spending” jar is for them to use as they choose, the “saving” jar is to be put in some type of savings or investment account and the “sharing” jar is to be used for contributions to charitable causes. You can extend the spending, saving and sharing themes by encouraging your kids to spend wisely, watch how their savings grow and feel pride in the work done by the charitable groups their dollars support.
Later, when your kids are older, and can earn money by babysitting, mowing lawns or working part-time, you can further encourage good financial habits by offering to match their contributions to a Roth IRA. And be sure to discuss the different types of investments available; they may enjoy learning about the ways in which they can par-ticipate in the financial markets.
Above all else, talk to them about the importance of de-veloping good financial skills and how these skills will play a part in your family’s overall well being.
Now, let’s turn to your parents. If they’re elderly, you may find that talking to them about financial issues may be considerably more challenging than talking about these issues with your children. It’s unfortunate, but true: Peo-ple are sensitive about money and often don’t want to talk about it.
You may find that you need to be persistent, especially if your parents are getting on in years. Perhaps you en-courage them to consider their current position, and what planning might need to be considered. Do they have ac-counts in a local bank? Where are their investments held? Do they have a financial advisor? Have they worked with legal professionals on any arrangements?
If your parents have expressed interest in leaving a legacy or passing assets to family members, you might consider encouraging them to seek assistance from the appropri-ate professionals. After all, if something were to happen to your parents without them having made the proper ar-rangements, their wishes may not be carried out. So this Thanksgiving, as you think about the value of your family, you might take some time to consider issues that need to be addressed. . It may take time and diligence — but when it comes to your loved one's wishes and well-being, it’s probably worth the effort.

The Genesis PrincipleGenesis 1:26-29 (NLT) Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.” 27 So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.” 29 Then God said, “Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food. After God created man he told him three things, #1 I will bless you, #2 I am giving you dominion and authority, and #3 I am going to teach you the law of seed time and harvest. God knew that if man would understand the power of THE BLESSING on his life, the authority and dominion he has, and how to use seed time and harvest, he would live in total victory upon the earth! Man that sounds good to me, how about you? This is the Genesis principle by which God designed you and I to live and when we do, nothing can hold us back!THE BLESSING is an empowerment that comes from God that enables you to prosper and to succeed! This is Good News in the world in which we live to know that there is something on us that empowers us to be successful! So how do we apply and enact this in our life? It begins by speaking it out of your mouth, “You will also declare a thing, And it will be established for you;” Job 22:28 NKJ Start by speaking this out your mouth because your words have power. Death and life are in the power of the tongue…Prov. 18:21 NKJ Say this out loud with me will you?.... “THE BLESSING of God in on my life and THE BLESSING causes me to prosper!”We need to put a guard over what comes out of our mouths. This is the danger of watching the news all the time, and reading the newspaper and hanging around negative people, all that negativity begins to get inside of you and once it does, it begins to come out by what you speak. And when that happens it holds you captive and holds you back! Learn to speak positive things; learn to replace all the negative things of the world with the Word of God. If God has said he has blessed you then we need to agree with Him! Say it one more time with me will you? “THE BLESSING of God in on my life and THE BLESSING causes me to prosper!” Find a Bible believing church and attend this week!
Six Things YOU can Do In Tough TimesBy Ron Ross(Part 2 of 2)
Fourth, cut fat, not muscle. Tough times may require you cut back on certain things to stay in business, but be careful not to cut that which makes you stronger. Marketing is muscle so don’t cut it completely and yield ground to your competitors. Build muscle, market wisely, do what you can to get aggressive during the downturn, and you’ll stand proud and strong when the economy rebounds. If you market strategically during down times, you will pick up market share as your competitors discount themselves into poverty and close their doors.
Fifth, personalize you relationship with your customers. I think it was sales expert Jeffrey Gitomer who said, “If you want your customers to love you, you need to make a pass at them once in a while.” It is one thing for your customers to know what you do and where you do it; but do you know your customers? Do you know their needs, their trials, triumphs and yearnings? Heck, do you even know their names?Start truly loving your customers. Call them by name. Woo them, flatter them, recognize them, visit with them, thank them, encourage them, help them in any way you can. If you don’t, your competitors will. No matter what service you provide or what products you sell, you will do more business and increase customer loyalty if your customers see you go the extra mile for them.A customer retained is an investment that pays dividends. Recent studies show it is 6–7 times more costly to acquire a new customer than it is to retain an old one.I had one client for over 13 years who paid me the equivalent of one-year’s salary for services rendered. In my first year of business, around Thanksgiving, I took him a coffee mug with my company logo on it filled with Christmas candy and told him thanks for his business. When I started to apologize for the cheap mug, he stopped me and said, “Hey Ron, it’s way more than any other vendor has ever given me!”Now here’s the big bonus for loving your customers: they will love you and they will talk about you to others. Happy customers are the most powerful marketing tool you will ever have – and the easiest to acquire – just love them first.
Finally, be patient and persevere. The tough times we are now in may take longer to get out of than any in the history of our country. Even the smartest economists don’t know what to expect in 2012, let alone the out years. The hardest thing to do in tough times is to have the patience and determination to persevere. An extended economic slump is especially discouraging, heart wrenching, and sometimes downright terrifying. But patience and perseverance are required if you intend to be one of the few left standing when the good times return. In the meantime, learn to take things as they come and roll with the punches. It could be a long and difficult journey, but we’re Americans, we’re up to it. Patience and persistence are two hallmarks of winners. If we can survive now, we will prosper later.Robert Schuller, pastor of the Crystal Cathedral in Southern California, once told an audience, “Tough times never last, but tough people do.” He later penned a book by the same title.Today we are in tough times – are you one of the tough people? If you are, you will stand while others fall, you will survive and you will thrive.©2011 Ronald D. Ross All Rights ReservedUsed with permission

On Dec. 7, 1787, in Dover, Del., the U.S. Constitution is unani-mously ratified by all 30 delegates to the Delaware Constitu-tional Convention, making Delaware the first state of the mod-ern United States. Government under the U.S. Constitution took effect on March 4, 1789.
On Dec. 10, 1901, the first Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stock-holm, Sweden, on the fifth anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel. Although Nobel offered no public reason for his creation of the prizes, it is believed that he did so out of moral regret over the lethal uses of his invention of dynamite and other explosives.
On Dec. 11, 1936, after ruling for less than one year, Edward VIII becomes the first English monarch to voluntarily abdicate the throne. The British government, public and the Church of England condemned his decision to marry American divorcee Wallis Warfield Simpson. Edward claimed it was impossible to discharge his duties without the woman he loved.
On Dec. 5, 1945, five U.S. Navy Avenger torpedo-bombers take off from the Ft. Lauderdale Naval Air Station in Florida on a three-hour training flight. They never returned, and no trace of the bodies or aircraft was ever found. The story helped ce-ment the legend of the Bermuda Triangle, an area of the Atlantic Ocean where ships and aircraft are said to disappear without a trace.
On Dec. 8, 1969, at a news conference, President Richard Nixon says that the Vietnam War is coming to an end. His pronounce-ments proved premature. In April 1970, he expanded the war by ordering attacks on communist sanctuaries in Cambodia.
On Dec. 6, 1976, deaf professional stuntwoman Kitty O’Neil sets the land-speed record for female drivers at the Alvord Desert in southeastern Oregon, averaging more than 512 mph.
? On Dec. 9, 1983, “Scarface,” starring Al Pacino as a Cuban refugee who becomes a Miami drug lord, opens in theaters. The film, written by Oliver Stone and directed by Brian De Palma, initially received unfavorable reviews but is now considered a classic.
