2013 / 2014 TERM DATES
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents
As we commence Term 4, there is always a sense of anticipation as the academic
programme and key school events are focused on bringing the year to a rewarding
conclusion. For the Year 12s the schooling phase is all but over. We have celebrated their
contribution to the School with five special events this week: the Principal's Lunch, the
Veteran’s Morning Tea, the Gift of a Candle Farewell Service by the whole school, the
Valedictory Eucharist at Christ Church Grammar School and the Fancy Dress Breakfast. It is
a time of high emotion for our seniors who are ready to leave us but are filled with some
trepidation about what the future holds. We wish them a bright future.
STAFF MATTERS
I am delighted to welcome Ms Tamara Bailey (Pre-Primary Education Assistant) back to the
School after a period exploring other career opportunities. An Old Wollastonian, Ms Bailey is
enjoying reacquainting herself with staff and students in the ELC.
A REQUEST
Parents are requested to avoid having their child arrive at school before 8.00am as
supervision is not provided. In the event that this is unavoidable, students are to sit outside
their classroom (Primary) or Student Services Reception (Secondary) and are to remain
there until 8.00am. OSH Club provides an excellent out of school care service on our
premises for children aged 4 to 14. Please keep this in mind. Enquiries can be made
through Administration.
All students should depart the School by 3.25pm unless alternative arrangements have
been made with their teacher. Students should not be waiting in the Church of Christ car
park for their parents to collect them beyond 3.30pm. In the event that students cannot be
collected by this time, for safety reasons students are required to wait on the front
verandah of the main Administration building.
THE TECHNOLOGY CENTRE
The new Technology Centre is taking shape with expected completion before the start of
the 2014 academic year. It promises to be an outstanding facility housing Food and
Textiles, Computing, Visual Art and Design and Technology.
Term 4 is always an exciting one for the School. I look forward to seeing many of you at
forthcoming events.
With good wishes
ANNE FORD
PRINCIPAL
PRIMARY
The last few weeks of Term 3 were characterised by the rich
variety of opportunities available for all students in the Primary
School. From Inter-School debates to the Athletics Carnival, the
Spelling Bee to the Film Festival, engaging assembly items to the
wonderful Art Exhibition, our students certainly benefit from the
breadth of programmes on offer and the capacity of our staff to
provide such rich learning experiences for our students. I
thoroughly enjoyed my first term at John Wollaston and I
acknowledge the strong work ethic and significant expertise of
our teaching staff.
Over the recent school holidays Miss Melissa Forslun, our Early
Learning Centre Coordinator, visited a number of schools in the
United Kingdom as part of a study tour organised by the
Association of Independent Schools in Western Australia. Miss
Forslun was able to share some of the knowledge she has gained
with staff and has many interesting photos of the centres she
visited. We look forward to working with Miss Forslun further to
increase our collective expertise in the area of early education. It
is important to note that Miss Forslun is a highly respected
educator who has worked closely with AISWA to contribute her
expertise to early childhood publications and has also personally
presented seminars to other teachers across the sector. We are
fortunate to have such a highly skilled educator as the
Coordinator of the Early Learning Centre here at John Wollaston.
In a similar vein, our Assistant Deputy of Teaching and Learning,
Mrs Fiona Currey, has been accredited by the International
Baccalaureate Organisation with the authority to visit other
schools as part of the assessment process for the Primary Years
Programme. Only highly skilled and experienced practicitioners
with the International Baccalaureate Organisation are
considered for this role. This is a credit to Fiona and evidence that
we are fortunate to have her as our curriculum leader.
With a dedicated teaching staff and a strong leadership team,
we strive to provide the best possible education for your children.
I look forward to the remainder of Term 4 as we build on what we
do well as educators and create a positive learning environment.
Our focus on teaching the students to regulate their emotions (to
remain as calm and thoughtful as possible) is already improving,
based on the feedback from parents and staff. By encouraging
students to have empathy for others, we will continue to build a
caring environment based on respect for one and all.
WAYNE REVITT
HEAD OF PRIMARY
EARLY LEARNING CENTRE
At the end of last term, I was fortunate enough to be involved in a
study tour of high quality early childhood education settings in
England and Scotland. The settings were chosen because of their
connections with families and the community, the quality of the
interactions with children and the amazing outdoor spaces and
connections that they had with the natural (forest) environment.
My favourite experience was seeing the children in the forest
school setting because it was amazing to see the skills and
independence that the children had developed. This led me to
reflect on the wonderful space that we have here in the Early
Learning Centre with the children being able to play in the
natural bush setting, climb trees and develop creativity in their
imaginative play. I am looking forward to continuing to develop
this area with our team. If anyone has access to tree stumps or
tree trunks that they would like to get rid of, we would love to take
these off your hands. Please see me or leave a message at the
ELC Reception if you think you can help.
Over the holidays, there was a new addition to the ELC family.
Mrs Nilsson welcomed her baby boy to the world. Jasper Luke
Nilsson was born on the 7 October weighing 8lbs 2 oz. Mr and Mrs
Nilsson are very excited and we congratulate them on their new
arrival.
It has been pleasing to see that the children have quickly settled
back into routine after the school holidays and have enjoyed a
positive start to the term. Term 4 is always a busy term in the ELC.
In the next couple of weeks the children will begin preparing for
the ELC Nativity, which will be held on Thursday 5 December at
8.50am in the BDISC. Please reserve this date in your diaries.
More details will follow in due course.

EARLY LEARNING CENTRE COORDINATOR
FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPALS
I would like to take this opportunity to wish our Leavers of 2013 all the best as they step from
the shelter and routine of John Wollaston into the big wide world! The final hurdle for many is
still the ATAR examinations and to these students I wish you focus and clarity as you prepare
and sit your papers.
To all our students, enjoy Leavers and stay safe!
ANNE HARRIS
DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (TEACHING AND LEARNING)
Welcome back to what promises to be a very busy term, albeit a brief one for our oldest students. Over the next two weeks we have
a number of functions to farewell our Year 12s including House activities, the Principal’s Lunch, a special morning tea for the
Veterans, the very moving ‘Gift of a Candle’ Service where the youngest students present a candle to each Year 12 student, the
Valedictory Service at Christchurch Grammar School and the fun-filled fancy dress breakfast on the final school day. Traditionally our
Year 12 students have finished off the year with dignity and grace and we expect nothing less from the 2013 seniors. I wish each and
every student great happiness and success in whatever he or she chooses to do post-school.
YEAR 11 VAP: 7 NOVEMBER 2013
This term students will take part in a Meningococcal Disease Awareness incursion from The Amanda Young Foundation to teach
students about prevention, identification & treatment.
Meningococcal Disease is a rare but deadly disease which affects
approximately 400 people a year in Australia, and can cause death within
hours if not recognised and treated promptly.
Teenagers and young adults are a high risk group for this deadly disease,
perhaps due to their busy, social lifestyles which bring them into contact with a
large volume of people.
The Amanda Young Foundation is a charity dedicated to reducing deaths in
WA from Meningococcal Disease. The Foundation was formed in 1998 following
the tragic death of Amanda Young from Meningococcal Septicaemia at the
tender age of 18 years. The Education and Awareness Program is fully funded
by Telethon and donations from the public.
For more information about Meningococcal Disease please visit
www.amandayoungfoundation.org.au. To book a free awareness presentation
for your workplace, sporting group or parenting group, please contact Health
Promotion Coordinator, Georgia Radinger, on 0425 159 598 or
education@amandayoungfoundation.org.au.
YEAR 10 EVENTS
The Year 10 students have two major events to look forward to. The ACC Beach Carnival is on 15 November and the River Cruise is
on 4 December. Further information about each event will come home in due course. Both events are a lot of fun but are a
privilege, not a right. Certain standards of behaviour, commitment and respect are expected from all students at all times and those
who do not comply may put their attendance at these events in jeopardy.
GRATITUDE
There is evidence to show that expressing gratitude and saying a meaningful thank you contribute significantly to a person’s well-
being. As William A. Ward writes, “God gave you a gift of 86 400 seconds today. Have you used one to say ‘Thank you?’”
As part of their Positive Education sessions, the Year 7 students have been making Gratitude cards. I know many parents will be the
recipients of these. Please enjoy them!

WALKING WITH THE PSALMS
I began this term with a reflection on the Psalms in the Secondary School Assembly
last Wednesday. There are 150 Psalms in the bible. Psalms are poems written by King
David that have also been used as songs and hymns. They address many of the
situations and emotions that we face as humans. These include sadness, guilt,
anger, questioning, contentment, joy and many more. I am aware that as we enter
the last term of the year, many will be feeling tired, drained, and for those who face
exams, perhaps even dread. With that in mind, I shared Psalm 27, which I view as a
Psalm of encouragement. I used “The Message” version of the bible. This version uses
contemporary language. These are some extracts from the Psalm.
Psalms 27
1 Light, space, zest—that’s God!
So, with him on my side I’m fearless,
afraid of no one and nothing.
2 When vandal hordes ride downready to eat me alive,
those bullies and toughsfall flat on their faces.
3 When besieged,I’m calm as a baby.
When all hell breaks loose,
I’m collected and cool.
4 I’m asking God for one thing, only one thing:
To live with him in His housemy whole life long.
I’ll contemplate His beauty;I’ll study at His feet.
5 That’s the only quiet, secure placein a noisy world,
The perfect getaway, far from the buzz of traffic.
6 God holds me head and shouldersabove all who try to pull me down.
I’m headed for His place to offer anthems that will raise the roof!
Already I’m singing God-songs; I’m making music to God.
13-14 I’m sure now I’ll see God’s goodnessin the exuberant earth.
Stay with God! Take heart. Don’t quit.
I’ll say it again:Stay with God.
As we face the many situations of our lives, some good and some not so good, we could do worse than to “walk with the Psalms.” I
often find strength and encouragement in the Psalms. I am confident that you could as well.
May God bless you in this walk.

STOCKTAKE
The LRC will be undertaking a Stocktake at the end of this term, commencing Thursday 5 December. All loans
to students, staff and other members of the school community are due back no later than 27 November. Could
you please assist us to prepare for the Stocktake by ensuring that all of your family’s loans are returned by this
date? And if you have an opportunity to do a little extra hunting to find those resources that have slipped down
behind the bookshelf or taken up residence behind the cushions on the couch, it would be greatly
appreciated. Just leave them in the returns slot in the LRC foyer.
OUR FAVOURITE PICTURE BOOK
The LRC staff’s favourite picture book this year is The Boy on the Page by Peter Carnavas. It is a delightful story about the meaning of
life, for all ages.
