IPES-IR3 Flame Sensor
By Tim Quine
ENGR 518
Purpose • Detect fires in industrial applications such
as refineries, paint productions, oil and gas boilers.
• Send alarm signals to user’s receiving devices or alarm systems.
• This is done via closed loop current signals.
Device Characteristics
• Enclosure Material – Stainless Steel Grade 316 or Aluminum 6061
• Weight – Stainless Steel 11 lbs. or
Aluminum 5.5 lbs.• Cable – 6,200 ft. (18 AWG)

• Cost industries money due to down time .• Must know difference or the result
could be catastrophic.• Uses microprocessor,
algorithms, multiple
sensors and wavelength
range settings.
Competitors Technologies
• Bimetal thermal switches• Computer Imaging Programs• Smoke detectors• SAFE air sample analysis
My Future Uses
• Compressed Air Foam System• Small scale flame sensors• Detecting all fires
