INVITATION
Integrated Petroleum Week 2013
THEME Surpass the Boundaries: Human, Technology And
Challange Ahead
DATE
7th March 2013 until 9th March 2013
Organized By
Society of Petroleum Engineers Institut Teknologi Bandung
SPE-ITB Student Chapter
Oil and gas industry brings many benefits to today's
world. Without oil and gas, vehicles cannot move
from one place to another place. No gas, no food to
be cooked and enjoyed by men. Without oil and gas,
life would never be like this.
Therefore, oil and gas play an important role in
human life. Society should have a deeper knowledge
of the technologies for oil and gas fields can be
appreciated that the quantity of oil and gas is
increasingly reduced.
Integrated Petroleum Week (IPWeek) 2013 is a new
program introduced by the SPE-ITB Student Chapter.
This program is aimed specifically to provide
facilities to everyone that eager to develop
themselves to acquire enhancement about
petroleum industry by giving them chances in
seminar, companies workshop, and competition.
The theme for IPWeek 2013 is “Surpass the
Boundaries: Human, Technology, and Challenge
Ahead”. This theme represents what mankind needs in
general to make sure its sustainability in usage of
petroleum. Human will be the vital point of the stability
in using petroleum as the main energy in the world.
Especially the university students will be the leader
whether we still use petroleum as the major source or
not in the future. But still, technology take large part of
the decision making made by humans. If the technology
can support humans to solve problems, there will be no
worry about the challenge in the future for petroleum
industry. We see these three points; Human,
Technology, and Challenge; as a comprehensive thought
that cannot be separated. We assume those points as
boundaries that we have to surpass as petroleum
engineers. This event will be a great trigger to start
thinking about what will happen in the future. A small
step for a bigger jump ahead.
Everyone plays an important role in oil and gas industry,
and that’s why we want everyone to be part of us in this
event. As the director of OGTEC 2011, it is my honour
and pleasure to invite your organization to become the
sponsor for this event. We need strong support and
collaboration fromyour organization, to make OGTEC
2011 a huge, prestigious and successful event. We
believe such event will benefit all parties, whether
students and industry practitioners itself. This is an
excellent way to boost your company’s profile with
industry leaders, professional and students who are the
future leaders.
INTRODUCTION AND INVITATION SPE-ITBINTEGRATED PETROLEUM WEEK (IPWeek) 2013

An exclusive event that held by SPE ITB SC.
After reaching success last year, we want to
maintain our best performance to hold this
event annually. We invite some respectable and
well-known oil and gas companies to give brief
explanation about their companies. Not only
giving a chance to open people mind about oil
and gas industry but also showing a good
impression from companies that take part in this
event.
Seminar Day
This seminar will be one of three main parts
of IPWeek 2013. Beside competitions and
Integrated Company Days, Seminar Day will
enhance the knowledge about the new invention
in petroleum industry. Nowadays, we meet some
obstacle to maintain the rate of oil and gas
production. We need some new technologies to
handle that problem. This seminar will give you
an image about what humankind have invent to
survive those challenge in oil and gas industry.

Debating: develops communication skills
assembling & organizing effective arguments
persuading & entertaining an audience
convincing audience that your arguments outweigh the opposition’s arguments
not: personal abuse, irrational attacks, or purely emotional appeals
I. TOPIC
"RENEWABLE AND GREEN ENERGY AS THE PART OF WORLD NEEDS"
Nowadays many scientists have focused on the development of renewable energy. Renewable
energy is not something new but the urgency of it has increased through the past years in order to
save our fragile earth. Most parts of the world are suffering from energy crisis. Therefore
renewable energy becomes an alternative for this crisis. Renewable energy also fulfils expectations
of energy usage that is ecological friendly. To disseminate the information about the latest
renewable energy technology to face current challenge, we present the annual debate competition
which is conducted by SPE InstitutTeknologi Bandung Student Chapter.
II. MOTIONS
Understand motions
• A motion can be phrased and interpretted differently
• Full propositional statements
• Not questions or phrases
• Affirmative: defend the motion
• Negative: oppose the motion
• Example of motions:
That we would let human cloning research to go on.
That a referendum is not what the Acehnese really need.
That Tarzan should go back to England.
• 1 MOTION PER ROUND
RULES OF DEBATE COMPETITION SPE-ITB INTEGRATED PETROLEUM WEEK (IPWeek) 2013
• OPEN MOTIONS
e.g. “This House Believe That the glass is half full”
• SEMI-CLOSED MOTIONS
e.g. “This House Would alter its genetic code”
• CLOSED MOTIONS
e.g. “This House Would bomb Iraq”
• SPIRIT OF THE MOTION
This is what the debate calls for.
III. CASE
Case: set of arguments supported by evidences
Anatomy of a case:
Definition: clarifies the motion/limits debate scope
Theme line: core argumentation/basic idea
Team split: distribution of arguments
Arguments and rebuttals
A. Case : Definition
Motion should be defined as a whole
Definition may contain:
Definition of key lexical units (words/phrases)
Parameters
Definition must be reasonable:
Have clear and logical link to motion
Debatable (a reasonable opposition exists)
Negative usually accepts affirmative’s definition
B. Case : Theme Line
“Case in a nutshell”
The underlying logic of a team’s case
Explains team’s strategy
Links together 1st, 2nd, and 3rd speakers
Answers “why?” To the (defined) motion
Theme line may be in the form of:
Words/phrases
A complete sentence
A complete logical syllogism
C. Case : Team Split
Distribution of arguments to speakers:
1st: smaller part (because 1st speaker also has to explain definition, theme line, and
team split)
2nd: larger part (bulk of case)
3rd: usually no part at all
Each speaker must prove case, watch for:
Invalid case (arguing beside the point, not proving case)
Hung case (case proven only after 1st & 2nd combined)
D. Case : Summary
IV. ARGUMENT
A good argument should have A-R-E:
Assertion - statement of the argument
Reasoning - explanation of the argument
Evidence - facts, statistics, etc.
A good argument should be linked back into the motion/theme line
Adjudicators want: logic and relevance
V. REBUTTAL
Argument attacking the opposing team’s argument, e.g. By showing that it:
Is based on an error of fact
Is irrelevant to the proof of the topic
Is illogical
Involves unacceptable implications
Should be accorded little weight
Doesn’t have to be point-by-point
Rebut the theme line or main arguments
VI. POLICY VS VALUE JUDGMENT
a. POLICY DEBATE
Implies the need to institute a policy, program, law, or any other type of action
To understand how a program would work requires that you lay down the mechanisms
of that program
a. VALUE JUDGMENT
Comparison of values and standards
c. ALLOWANCE FOR INTERPRETATION
A value judgment debate may need a policy in order to be assessed whether it would truly
work (the adjudicator is still an average reasonable person)
VII. FORMAT
Format : Asian Parliamentary Debate
Affirmative/Government vs Negative/Opposition
led by a Chairperson
Speech order :
Government Opposition proposes and defends the motion refutes and negates the motion
Prime Minister Leader of the Opposition
Deputy PM Deputy LO
Government Whip Opposition Whip
Gov. Reply Speech Opp. Reply Speech
1. Prime Minister
Provides the set-up of the Debate
• Definition and Context
(preferably non-literal)
• Parameters
• Problem
(or at least the value to be appraised)
• Standards and goals (preferably expressly stated)
• Policy and Mechanisms (For a policy debate)
• Team Split (very brief please)
• Provides 1-2 well formulated arguments
1. LABEL/BANNER (catch phrase) Clarify your premise if you need to
2. HOW?
3. WHY?
4. SO WHAT? (Tie-up with your goals and standards)
5. EXAMPLE
2. Leader of the Opposition
• Rebuts the previous speech – errors of fact, faulty premise, inconsistencies, irrelevance
• Provides a clash, negation, or maintain status quo
• Provides their team split
• Provides constructive matter and argumentation based on their clash
*AREAS OF REBUTTAL
1. FACTUAL ERRORS
2. LOGICAL ERRORS (No links)
3. LOGIC is sound but the argument does not resolve the issue
4. Faulty Premises
- Provide Comparative analysis that allows your team to surpass the other’s argument
5. Breaking deadlocks
*CLASH
• COUNTER POLICY
- Oppose the proposition and provide an alternative resolution to the problem
• STATUS QUO IS WORKABLE OR SELF-CORRECTING
- The clamor by government is exaggerated, unnecessary, and even if there was a
problem it is already self-correcting
• COUNTER – VALUE
- There are other values worth protecting
- Make a comparative analysis of social values of course
*CONSTRUCTIVE VS NEGATIVE MATTER
• CONTRUCTIVE MATTER argues on the merits of a value or proposal
• NEGATIVE MATTER merely negates a value or proposal
• A DEBATE has an equal burden of constructive matter imposed on both sides
• A mere rebuttal case therefore cannot merit a win for a team
3. Deputy Prime Minister/Deputy Leader of the Opposition
• Provide Rebuttals
• Rebuilds the case of government/opposition
• Uses the premise of the first speaker while at the same time providing a distinct argument
• Avoiding a rehash or repackaged case or argument
And if possible a deeper insight into the debate (progression)
4. Government Whip/Opposition Whip
• Gives some rebuttals and provides a summary of the issues which transpired in
the debate and provide a thematic discussion of each issue while advancing the
case of the team.
• Provides a fresh perspective/insight into the debate
• Provides a thematic approach on their analysis primarily emphasizing the merits of
the closing team.
• No new matter from whip speakers.
ISSUE 1:
THEY SAID: WE SAID:
WHY WE’RE BETTER
• An issue refers to a group of clumped arguments referring to an overall topic
- for example, the need to recognize the civic conscience, church dogma, and
liberal modern ideals could all be bannered under the issue of MORALITY
• An ISSUE could also be about contrasting ideologies
- for example MORALS vs LIBERAL ECONOMIC IDEALS
5. Reply Speech
More often than not, reply speakers would just simply talk about how he/she felt
the debate went through and why should the adjudicator give the win to their side
(biased adjudication). Reply speech has no bearing to the adjudication’s decision
but will affect the TOTAL TEAM SCORE. To put it simply, a reply speaker would say,
“adjudicators, make my team win please.”
VIII.OTHER PARTS OF THE SPEECH
• A speech lasts for about 7 minutes
• A healthy speech lasts from 6:45 to 7:15
• Points of Information may be given and taken in the course of a speech
- Points of information are those instances when a speaker from an opposing team
may be given a short period in order to pose rebuttals or clarify issues.
IX. POINTS OF INFORMATION
• 1:00 – 1 CLAP (POIs may now be taken)
• 6:00 - 1 CLAP (No more POIs)
• 7:00 – 2 CLAPS – Please end your speeches
• 7:20 – Possible penalties
• A POI last for up to 15 seconds. The speaker in front must accept it in order for the
15 second period to run.
X. ADJUDICATION
Matter (content) - 40%
o Arguments (logic, use of evidences, relevance)
Manner (delivery) - 40%
o Public-speaking skills: vocal style, use of language, use of notes, eye contact,
gesture, stance, dress, impression of sincerity, and humor
o Personal attacks on opponents reduce manner points
Method (structure) - 20%
o Structure: of individual speech and of team’s case
o Response to the dynamics of the debate
XI. DEFINITIONAL CHALLENGE
METHOD MUST BE FOLLOWED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
1. EXPRESSLY STATE THAT YOU ARE CHALLENGING THE DEFINITION
2. STATE THE GROUNDS OF YOUR CHALLENGE
3. STATE YOUR NEW DEFINITION
4. OPPOSE YOUR OWN DEFINITION
A. GROUNDS FOR DEFINITIONAL CHALLENGE
• TIME-PLACE SET
- Specialized knowledge is highly discouraged. Setting up the debate in
Paraguay, or where else that is not that known is not advisable. Also,
setting it up in the past and somewhere else that a certain event
happened is again not allowed.
• TRUISM
- Simply, debating about a fact that cannot be debated upon. Example of
this is: THBT the sun rises on the east.
• SQUIRREL
- In a Squirreled motion, if ever there is room for debate then try to
engage the government out of the spirit of dynamism
*Only the Leader of the Opposition may impose a definitional challenge
XII. DEBATER DECORUM
• Do not approach the podium until you have been recognized by the adjudicator
• Respect the adjudicator when he/she calls for order
• Do not badger your opponent or use intimidation tactics
• You may cross the house after the debate
• Leave the room after the debate but remain within nearby premises
