• Multiple “lives” of a BIM– Design intent model (goes to a contractor)

– Construction model (more details, sequencing (4D), cost)

• A 3D CAD model only represents the geometries

• A 3D BIM model includes in addition:

– Objects, meaning the elements also include attributes and relationships

– Spaces, 2D or 3D polygons• Type of room

• Referencing BIM data, not loading it!

• In this process, the BIM data is not used to generate GIS data. The BIM data becomes an „external‟ resource to a GIS in the same fashion as links to multimedia.

• Referencing the BIM data, also means no risk of breaking the BIM – it can not be modifying!

• IFC data can be loaded into 3D GIS platform

• IFC data can be georeferenced in the design phase

• BIM-spaces can be automatically geocoded

• By doing so, the BIM-spaces will work as data portals or gateways on each room or suite basis

• The loaded IFC elements, including the geocoded BIM-spaces, can be stored and managed in spatial databases

• 3D spatial analysis can be performed based on various enquires and visualized in the 3D space

What’s in it for Government organizations?

• They can update the existing 3D City model and Base Map by use of the “as-build” 3D BIM

• Create dynamic 3D Maps which reflects the changes in the city in a short time frame

• Semantic attributes are represented on the elements and spaces

• By filtering processes the Level of Detail can be defined for both exterior and interior

• Very accurate roof and façade geometries

• Rich of exterior and interior details

• It will limit the airborne data capture

What’s in it for Government organizations?

• Migration from CAD to ”intelligent” 3D objects defines a new role for a 3D City GIS

• Geocoding of the BIM-spaces adds the possibility for a data portal, where data bases, public data registers, data archives etc. can be searchable and published to the 3D GIS

• Published data are editable and can afterwards be posted back to respective systems

• That means a high variety of spatial analysis are possible

• 3D thematic maps can be generated based on the query parameters

• Use the ”as-build” model as an active 3D model during it‟s life-cycle… create potentials for:

• Life-cycle maintenance; the model will be available for professionals during reconstruction and modification during it‟s life time

• Data container; can generate very accurate lists of areas for e.g. cleaning, painting, polishing etc.

• The awareness of material, geometry and georeferencemake it usable for e.g. energy analysis

BIM and IDM

• IDM is a process to specify and ensure what types of information are required in the BIM model during the construction of a project, or the operation of a build asset.

• It also provides detailed specification of the information that a particular user needs

• For a Governmental organization, owning their building assets, there can be several IDM‟s for various purposes, e.g. Planning, Maintenance, Operational, Environmental etc.
