IntroductionofHebeiProvincialEyeHospital

OverviewHebeiProvincialEyeHospital,foundedin1904,isoneofthemostfamousophthalmichospitalsin China. It has the Hebei Provincial Eye Disease Treatment Center, Hebei Provincial KeyLaboratory of Ophthalmology, Hebei Provincial Institute of Ophthalmology, Post-doctoralResearch Station of Ophthalmology and Hebei Provincial Eye Bank. Ophthalmology is aprovincial priority and the hospital’s Ophthalmology Department is a key clinical componentbothprovinciallyandnationally.HebeihasthebiggestpubliceyehospitalinChinawith500bedsand 20 departments, which provides excellent eye health services for more than 500,000outpatientsand20,000inpatientseachyear.

HistoryIn 1886, a Frenchmissionary, JulesBruguiere, built a five-roomCatholicChurchatNorth LongStreet of Xingtai, which was the beginning of eye care. Then, they diagnosed and treatedcommoneyediseasesforthelocalpopulation.In1904,thisCatholicChurchbuiltaDaojiEyeClinicinthewestofNorthLongStreet,whichwasthebeginningofourhospital.

In1910,theclinicwasexpandedanddevelopedtoaShundeRenciHospital.In 1929, a polish priest, Father Sunievitch, came and managed the hospital. Because of hissuperiormedicalskill,hebecameafamousophthalmologistthroughoutChina.Patientsfromallover China came to the hospital for the ophthalmic treatments. Father Sunievitch completedseveral difficult operations, such as correction of entropion, chalazion excision, pterygiumextraction, extracapsular cataract extraction, glaucoma trepanation, iridencleisis, rectusresectionandrecession,andscleralshorteningforretinaldetachment.

Inthespringof1939,atwo-floorinpatientbuildingwith70roomswascompleted.Theinpatientbednumberwasincreasedto60thatsummer. In December 1946, the hospital was nationalized by the Military Ministry of Health. It wasrenamedXingtaiEyeHospital.

In1948,thefirstMinisterofHealth,XinzhongQian,wroteaspecialplaquestatingtheobjectivesby“Preventingblindness,dispellingbitter,curingdiseases,savinglife.”FromAugust1st,1948,thehospitalwasdirectlymanagedbytheHebeiProvincialPublicHealthAuthority,andrenamedastheHebeiProvincialPeople'sEyeHospital.InFebruary1954,Dr.DingfanYinsuccessfullycarriedoutthefirstkeratoplasty,whichimprovedthepatient’svisualacuityfromblindnessto16/20.NewspaperssuchasTheHebeidaily,HealthNewsandPeople‘sDailyreportedonthisevent.InNovember19th,1955,thehospitalwasrenamedasHebeiProvincialXingtaiEyeHospitalandfromJuly1993toOctober2013,itwasfurtherrenamedasXingtaiCityEyeHospital.

SinceOctober2013,thehospitalisknownastheHebeiProvincialEyeHospital.

Today

HebeiProvincialEyeHospitalhasbeendevelopedasaspecialpublichospital,whichisfamousforitsOphthalmology,goodforOtolaryngology-HeadandNeckSurgery,andStomatology.Today, there are totally 600 beds, including 500 beds for ophthalmic inpatients; 18 operatingrooms;800staff,includingmorethan200ophthalmologists.Thereare38medicaldepartmentsand19sub-specialtygroups. Hebei is regarded as the "Top Three" public eye hospitals, which combinemedical, teaching,research, first-aid and health care with patients from 29 provinces, municipalities andautonomousregionsofChina.
