CONTEXTUALISATION (*)

Reflecting upon my 2018-19 Art Director/Media Technician role at the University of Bedfordshire in one word is immeasurable. The internship allowed my media creativity and artistry to flourish past which I initially perceived from the introduction; I knew from the first email offering myself the position that it would involve preproduction in the form of dressing sets to a brief - outlined in advance

- further production experience on lighting, capturing via the image(s) and recording via the sound(s) of the productions to maximise the best footage for the MA students with collaboration and teamwork with the Teaching Staff and Technical Staff and also postproduction of editing parts of which I had captured.

Each of these skillsets I had existing obtain through working as an Art Director at Fashion Show Live (Luton), student and professional productions prior; though the difference was this internship was on a weekly bases, and because most of the filming

was for the MA students, scenes for their modules, experience and development they were repeated with a different acting pair or individual(s) which extended my creativity to not only capture the best shots for the MA students and teaching staff to be both happy with, whilst also framing the MA students and their actions in the best possible compositions…I also wanted the scenes

which were exactly the same to look different, so that they can be proud of their acting, and I could be proud of the shots with them looking different - as I don’t repeat - achieved from adjusting the proxemics’ of the set in dressing and changing the angles to be diverse yet remaining captivating and professional.

Alongside being behind the lighting set-ups, camera and the sound recording devices, I directed and gave pointers where they were needed – in most cases the students already knew there vision of how they should act and where, on-top of the direction of

the teaching staff, though there were a few moments during the filming area where the teaching staff couldn’t fit in the area…and these were the moment(s) where I minimally intervened, I did not wish to intervene during moments of the teaching staff elaborations and run-throughs because I felt I would be overstepping my supporting Art Director/Media Technician role which I

wasn’t comfortable doing, and also because my filming experience is media and not acting specifically, the teaching staff always gave the correct guidance, my pointers were from a filming perspective i.e. to make the framing more cinematic of thematic, I politely enquired to the students to minimally change-up there postures, and gesture to fit in frame alongside the teaching staff

advice; what they acted they were creatively responsible for, and what was filmed I was responsible for , (with guidance for the shots needed from the teaching staff) – summarising from a capturing point after the students had finished there scenes, I decided

P87

it would be ideal to break-up a few of the scenes and shots with inserts shots and cutaways to obtain the tone of the setting(s) with fidelity; i.e feet shots, or close-ups of the hands around the cup, where I intervened for the best footages.

The MA students choose to edit their own scenes, which I believe is better for their development, commitment and part of their course. In the new year of 2019 I filmed and recorded a guest speaker – Actor, Aidan Wytock – originally I was outlined to cut the

2hour masterclass into a 3-5minute promo video, though I felt compelled to split the 2hour session into 9 insightful narratives, for promotional purposes due to the content within the session I felt would be enriching for present and future students to view and become enticed by because the session was so stimulating for the acting audience (and also knowledgeable for); I had a

collaborative editing session during the polish edit stage with Maria Wiener to trim further an overview promo video of the guest speaker to make it compile with the university standards.

I utilised Premier Pro the editing software for the promo videos – also I utilised the image editing software Photoshop for branding purposes the videos, i.e adjusting the logo to black background – I located royalty free music which I deem appropriate. The only minimal constraint I found myself in during the whole internship was the on location voxpop(s) being (N), (O), (T); the constraint

was a technical constraint; a segment was filmed three times due to sound issues– I found myself ill for one day during the internship where another MA student filled in and captured the voxpop first, also to technical difficulty – though the scenario was rectified by the third filming with myself, the student in the voxpop showed passion to continue, and in each of the voxpop sessions,

the equipment utilised for all the productions I have had experience on and elaborated during the production of the constraints which were eventually overcome. I utilised predominantly a Canon 7D, though at time in the theatre I did operate Sony camera(s), the lighting set-ups were mainly a flood light, though at times I did implement and execute three-point lighting to get a nice hair light

and slight silhouette of the action. The best part of the internship for myself I have to segment into three points; the first was filming of (H) in the white rooms with

Molly, Reece and Dean because I had the approval in the set design to add pink tints in the lighting to emphasise a disgust atmosphere which tied in with subject matter (pink is referenced to the colour of disgust by Robert Plucknicks Emotion Wheel) . The second was filming Amanda and Dean in the forensic rooms because of my diverse filming angles and framing I wanted to

maximise the interplay between the storyline, location and action. The third and most important enjoyable parts were the teamwork and collaboration with the teaching staff – Maria Wiener and

Margo Annette - the support staff - Media Technicians Paul, Mark, and Thomas – and the amazing talented students who were open to adjustments and were happy to wait an extra 10 seconds for me to frame, focus and capture correctly with the studious

P88

outlined briefs from the teaching staff, and the knowledgeable expertise of the support staff my art directing was achieved to a greater degree because of its freedom.

The talent exhibited by the MA acting student over-the-course of my internship, actioned myself to cast a student – Amanda Pei -in my current MA Digital Film Project film MEMORIES8 (Pronounced Memories Cubed); if I had not wrote the script prior (with

creating characters of certain gender, nationalities and ages to link) and casted 90% of the actors/actress before starting my internship I would have casted all the MA acting students due to their craft being of a engaging and professional nature and will and have recommended them for other media productions.

Elaborated visually throughout my internship document showcases the plethora of locations I filmed in and at (from the white rooms, theatre, forensic rooms, café and television studio; also shooting in the green screen room) and the different settings I

collaboratively created with what was at hand within the university and also my own props , I mainly like to utilise flowers in my media as a subtle incorporation of colour and to stimulate a natural and beautiful viewing; I enjoy creating videography with photography framing.

I believe the internship is/was a great opportunity, I immersed myself in supporting role and supported where I was informed to and also when needed for the best of the recordings and experience. Looking back I feel proud of what I, the students and teams

achieved in the internship alongside enjoying the process; I contributed in the preproduction, production and postproduction. I was informed that the course desired more online material; and to film and edit nineteen videos as well as supplying screen shots of the recordings for further marketing purposed I feel I achieved what was aimed for in my internship on a personal level of my own

growth and also the growth and acknowledgment of the course (online material).
