Juror’s StatementIt is always an honor and a serious responsibility to jury any art competition. Having entered

many shows, I know the emotional investment that each entry represents. We are elated whenour painting is accepted, crestfallen when it is not! I want to commend everyone who took a riskand entered the show. Do not be discouraged if your painting did not make it into this year’sshow. Every exhibit should be a wonderful learning experience, as an exhibitor and/or as aviewer. To that end, if you would like to learn more about myevaluation of your painting, I am happy to share my thoughtswith you. Art is one of those wonderful activities in life wheregrowing and learning has no limits.

Jurying a show is always subjective, but I strive to eliminateas much personal bias as possible. There were four categoriesof criteria considered, with 1 to 5 possible points for each one.Content (story or emotional impact), Composition (design),Originality and Technique were what I was evaluating. Everyartist has a different hierarchy of how they would rank the importance of these different aspectsof painting. I personally feel originality is more important than technique, but that is a personalbias. For this show, all four categories had equal weight. I added up the points and entries with15 or better were accepted. Congratulations to those artists and to those who received awards.

For me, the true value of art is in the activity itself. The sheer joy of sloshing paint or makingmarks, exploring color, expressing ideas, discovering surprises and getting lost for hours in amagical world is far more important than the final result. Enjoy the process, love your time cre-ating, strive to always learn more and you will always be the winner!

About the JurorMyrna Wacknov is a practicing artist and workshop instructor specializing in figurative and portrait

character studies. She attended Washington University in St. Louis and later finished her degree inPainting and Drawing at the College of Mateo and San Francisco State University.

She has attained Signature Membership in the American Watercolor Society, National WatercolorSociety, the California Watercolor Society, the San Diego Watercolor Society and the Rocky Moun-tain Watercolor Society. Myrna has received awards in many national and international competitions,including the CFS Medal in the 2008 American Watercolor Society International Exhibition andsemifinalist in the 2009 Portrait Competition of the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian.

Her work appears in "Strokes of Genius 2", "Strokes of Genius 3", "Splash 12", and "Incite:Dreams Realized" published by North Light. An article in Watercolor Artist magazine, June of 2015features her self-portrait series.
