Dear attendees, members and future partners

It was my pleasure to host the inaugural International Referral Conference at the London Film Museum on the 27th & 28th September 2012. We welcomed approximately 150 individuals from more than 50 different jurisdictions around the world. This included members from our legal, accountancy, finance and transaction referral groups. For those that came and supported the event, thank you for your enthusiasm, investment of time and wonderful feedback (We have included a selection of “Testimonials & Comments” on page 21 within this event pack).

What makes us unique?

This question can be answered in many ways… from the structure of one exclusive member per area of expertise and jurisdiction, to the interaction between a wide variety of different types of advisers. Others may say, it’s the flexibility and freedom members have or our own expertise in innovative technology and social media tools.

However, in my opinion, it is the people within the group. Our selection process is focused on gaining experts with the highest levels of expertise, but also individuals who share our ethos, have a passion for networking and want their firm to offer cutting edge / innovative international advice. I see the development of personal relationships between members as a vital ingredient to the growth of the group and I took great pleasure in seeing the fantastic interaction between attendees in London.

This was achieved by technology; we used a selection of software / applications to support networking. Each attendee had use of an iPad for the duration of the event. This enabled us to offer note-taking tools, electronic business cards for all attendees and live ‘Q&A’ sessions. In addition there was a wide variety of presentations, social functions and ‘break out’ groups. The ‘break out’ groups proved a particularly successful platform for peers to communicate, share ideas and discuss issues they are facing in their own jurisdiction/practise area.

In conclusion, it was undoubtedly a huge success. However, we already see room for improvement and areas which we can develop significantly, be that location, technology, event content or group strategy. Watch this space!

All the best

About International Referral International Referral was formed in April 2010. In contrast to traditional publishing, directories and rankings, the group was created to build and develop long lasting cross-border relationships via a network of like-minded individuals. We now work with over 700 of the world’s leading advisers over four groups; Law, Accountancy, Finance and Transaction Referral.

Our member services include; referrals, introductions, publishing, social media support and a network marketing strategy.

About International Referral & Our Events

About IR EventsWe are committed to providing platforms where our members can meet each other ‘face to face’. Despite the increasing importance of online networking, we feel such events are vital in establishing trust and making a personal connection, which are clearly essential for any successful long-term relationship.

Previous events include:

• Dubai November 2011 at The Capital Club Members Bar, hosted by Cramer Salamian.

• Brussels May 2012 with Lydian, our exclusive Corporate Law member in Belgium.

• London September 2012 at The London Film Museum

In 2013, we will offer two kinds of event:

• IR Annual Conference. A yearly event, in which we will encourage all members to attend. This will have an emphasis on increasing referrals in the group, member & group strategy, interactive presentations and break out groups on various practice areas and sectors.

• IR ‘On the Road’. Meetings which will be in association with existing members. These will be used to engage members from different geographical regions or more diverse areas of expertise.

For further information on either participating or possibly co-hosting an IR Event, please contact thomas@international-referral.com.

Networking and working with like-minded people is what makes the world not only ‘go round’, but enjoyable and profitable.

Emerging markets - Indian focus group

The Indian review was split in two parts.

Part One

A review of private equity and venture capital activity in India.

How recent changes to the alternative investment fund regulations have affected private equity investments in India.

The sectors that have seen the most VC funding, targeted at India and how this has altered, as India has developed over the last decade.

The attitude of the Indian Government to the ownership of strategic assets and companies by foreign private equity entities.

The concerns about investing in India because of poor corporate governance and government corruption. What safeguards are in place to reassure them?

Part Two

A more general overview of investment in India and the opportunities which exist for foreign investors.

Manmohan Singh’s new raft of proposals to open up the Indian economy. Will we see US/European investment banks expanding their presence in India?

Sectors likely to benefit; such as retail, the airline sector and media have all been targeted for foreign inward investment.

The proposed General Anti-Avoidance Rules, or GAAR. Will the authorities be able to retrospectively tax overseas deals involving Indian assets. How will this affect investment in the Indian economy from inside or outside the country?

What can be done to find a compromise that ensures inward investment, but also provides tax to fund the modernisation of India.

Cross border deal making

We invited a selection of IR members to talk about assisting companies entering their marketplace and also their requirements outside of their own country.

How has the amount of restructuring and arbitration work firms are carrying out changed as more companies find it hard to service debts or pay suppliers as a result of the stagnant European economy.

The advantages of a mid-sized firm with partners that have big firm experience. The level of expertise teamed with the flexibility of a smaller firm and what competitive advantage this creates.

Has the Eurozone crisis thrown up any extra challenges for investors in terms of the financial or commercial issues they should analyse closely before making a decision?

The Middle East and North Africa are attractive markets for western businesses, but the lack of corporate governance can be unsettling. How can a company looking to invest in the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) check that a partner / counter party is legitimate and suitably registered?

How members are winning new business in a tough economic environment?

How can professional services firms enhance their client relationships by providing more than just basic advice.

Break out groups

The ‘break out’ groups proved to be a huge success in London. These sessions were co-hosted by one or two leading IR member firms and were between 1 and 1:30 hrs. They consisted of a brief presentation by each of the hosts and then an interactive discussion. This open forum ensured all participants in the group, were able to connect, contribute and be actively involved in directing content. Each format set was the same, although due to the unique nature and less formal environment, each session developed its own identity, ensuring they delivered what the attendees wanted from each session they attended.

Having attended the International Referral Global Conference on 27th and 28th September, 2012

at the London Film Museum in County Hall, London, I was most impressed with the venue – overlooking the Thames and the Houses of Parliament - and delighted to meet fellow International Referral members.

As International Referral is an organisation which promotes excellence, Cedar Rose as a company is honoured to have been invited to join and to have our collective commitment to providing an excellent service recognised. Networking with other members who are already known to share the same high standards and values was extremely useful and I learnt a lot from the various presentations on topics ranging from due diligence and employment law to social networking. I look forward to building on the relationships we made with fellow professionals from all over the world including Europe, the USA, South America, Australasia, the Middle East and Africa and to meeting them and the IR team again at a future International Referral Conference.

Christina Massaad Director, Cedar Rose Int. Services Ltd, Cyprus

It was a special privilege and pleasure to have had the opportunity to participate in the IR London

conference and to get to know the International Referral team. They have done a great job in organising and conducting such a conference, which was a real success, the outcome for many of us was even more than expected. I am looking forward to working together to develop IR as an institution that everybody will be happy and proud to belong to! How Obama said it so nicely: yes, we can!

Peter Diedrich DSC Legal, Germany

I was really impressed by the way you organise the network, and allow a maximum of the attendants to

get together and talk. I have made a number of contacts and referred two of our clients to other members.

I liked in particular the fact the network is both global and flexible, and includes non-lawyers such as business consultants, company and accounting services etc… from all over the world.

Stéphane Bertouille Everest Law, Belgium

The International Referral Summit provides an excellent platform for improving one’s knowledge in

the ever-evolving professional service industry. The industry is going through some revolutionary changes and I am grateful for the efforts of the IR team in keeping professionals, such as myself, up-to-date with the latest regulations and developments.

Lastly, it provides a spectacular networking opportunity, and becomes a more lavish setting each year. I look forward to being a regular attendee at all of IR’s relevant seminars.

Zayd Maniar Horwath Mak, the UAE

I am very enthusiastic about everything that we have learned and discussed in the 2012 International

Referral (IR) Conference in London and look forward to reviewing my law firm´s marketing strategy by using the available social media tools highlighted to us during the event. We expect to implement it with the support of the IR team. After this meeting I noted that there is a deep and sincere desire of more integration and close cooperation among the members of the IR network compared to the traditional networks and I believe that this will benefit all the group.

Walter Stuber Brazil

Testimonials & Comments

We have been delighted to receive wonderful feedback from the attendees and would like to share just a few comments about the event.

www.international-referral.com | page 22

The conference was not only enjoyable and informative but gave us a great opportunity to mix with an diverse

group of professionals working in similar size firms across the world. One of the contacts we made in London has already recommended our services to a client, so we hope to develop mutually beneficial business relationships directly as a result of attending the conference.

Stuart Foster Peregrine Corporate Services Limited, Isle of Man

The conference in London was the second International Referral event I attended, and it was

great to get to know some of the people I had met at the conference in Brussels better this time, as well as meeting other International Referral members, whom I also hope to see again next time. Getting the content right for an audience of accountants, lawyers and other professionals from different parts of the world is probably a tricky balancing act, but I think the International Referral team succeeded in attracting a variety of speakers and panellists to cover issues that are pertinent to most professionals nowadays, such as use of social media and networking. As a lawyer based in the EU, it was also very interesting to learn from practitioners in emerging markets what their perspective is on the opportunities and developments in their countries.

Congratulations to the whole International Referral team, for the excellent meeting held in London:

Perfect organisation, amazing venue, good speakers and very interesting break out groups. I’d also like to thank all the attendees who contributed to such a successful meeting. It’s not easy to gather so many good professionals from around the world and we hope to meet all of them, or even more, in the next meetings.

Joan Lluís Hereter HyC Consulting Empresarial, Spain

We enjoyed the event and made what I hope will be useful new contacts. We thought that the group

had many common interests and benefitted from its very international character, as well as from the fact that very few attendees were direct competitors in their respective market places. The International Referral team obviously made a huge effort to make the event a success and I thought that our cooperation with the IR team in preparation for the event worked well. Based on our positive experience to date, I look forward to engaging with International Referral on a more permanent basis.

Gregor Kleinknecht Klein Solicitors, England

The recent International Referral Conference at London was an enriching experience as it enabled

like-minded professionals from across the world to interact with each other. The interactive sessions, especially the ones on social and media networking, were captivating. Overall it was a great platform to exchange ideas, strengths and capabilities, especially for mid-tier legal firms, and evaluate potential synergies for future collaboration. International Referral has a dedicated team and their commitment and eye for detail made the event a success. I thank International Referral’s team, especially Thomas Wheeler, for their efforts and look forward to continued attendance to future events.

The IR London event provided every attendee with an iPad for the duration of the conference. Our aim was to show our members the future of events, the innovative tools which are available and how effective they can be for storing contacts, notes and obtaining feedback.

Evernote

Via Evernote, each member can access all presentations given during the two days, your own notes and an electronic business card of each attendee. We encourage you to use the ‘how to’ below, so you can follow up with all the connections you made.

In addition, you can also access the results of our interactive session at the end of day two. Find out if it was a success and get feedback on the technology. Find out more about future developments (new products / strategy for the group). This can also be accessed via the below link;

Link to PDF of results

We fully endorse Evernote as a tool which can be very useful for any professional adviser. Functionality ranges from note taking at client meetings, storing contacts, recording audio or sharing material via various social media platforms.

Evernote ‘How to’;

If any members haven’t already done so, you can set up a free Evernote account at evernote.com.

Included is an introductory guide from Evernote, which explains how to set up accounts and get the most from the application. The major benefits for our clients include the ability to record and save notes, files, web pages, sound recordings and photographs. These can then be accessed from any of their other devices (PC, desktop, laptop, smartphone, tablet). This can be very useful for client meetings and also for networking purposes.

All of the delegates who attended the conference were invited to the International Referral Shared Evernote. This gives them access to all of the presentations that were given, as well as of the business cards and photographs that were scanned.

If any delegates need to be re-invited to the shared notebook or re-submit their business card details, please let us know and we can assist.

Contact rachel@international-referral.com.

Note that as long as you set up the account with the email address given prior to the conference, you will automatically have access to all of this information in the SHARED notebooks tab (top left of the Evernote page).
