Why Intelligent Compaction (IC)?

What are the key characters for a good soil and base compaction? – High Compressive/Shear Strength – High Stiffness/Modulus – Low Permeability – Low Swell/Shrink – Low Settlement – Uniformity and Consistency

Do we know for sure a good compaction has been achieved? Can we do a better job?

What Is IC?

A vibratory roller equipped with a stiffness measurement system that continuously measures and reports the material’s stiffness in real time

A GPS-based documentation system that continuously records and reports the roller locations in real time

An onboard display panel showing a color-coded map of stiffness and roller’s locations in real time

IC benefits

Provides uniformity information 100% coverage of the compacted area

Tracks roller locations and pass counts

Identifies areas of under/over compaction

Monitors compaction process in real time and improves productivity and minimizes cost

Provides performance-based info as a better link to mechanistic pavement design

Improves safety in construction zones
