To start, this title probably comes on a little strong. The men and women who run service agencies are businesspeople, after all. In 2020, Toast, Inc. surveyed 700+ restaurant guests about great restaurant experiences today1. 51% of guests said the quality of the food is the most important thing when selecting a restaurant. Not only are guests paying for an experience when they choose to dine out, they come—and stay, and come back!—for the food. Listen to feedback and get creative within the constraints of your budget and supplier availability to ensure you’re always serving up more bang for their buck.

is clean. Actively seeing employees cleaning, sanitizing and paying extra attention to color-coded zone cleaning protocols adds another level of reassurance. There are lots of new products on the market that provide literal signs about the status of areas and objects accessible to guests. Going out of the way to physically show guests your dedication to their safety and the safety of your employees is sure to be appreciated and remembered.
With even more people ordering delivery, there are opportunities to step up your presentation and provide more of an experience than before. Customers put an even greater emphasis on food quality outside of the restaurant—65% of guests care about the quality of food when ordering delivery2, so rethinking your to-go protocol won’t go unnoticed. Consider using different types of packaging for different menu items (like cold vs. hot), or including a personal element that evokes the ambience or brand you represent. This could be something as simple as napkins with your logo, or a fancier touch like nicely-packaged, recyclable stainless steel cutlery instead of disposable plastic flatware.

Since the look of wait staff wearing face masks, face shields, and gloves can be a little jarring, treating them like part of an employee's regular uniform is a smart move. Matching colors and fabrics uphold the professional appearance that contributes to your atmosphere. Consider extending those choices to PPE by supplying matching face masks. This will help maintain a cohesive look among your employees.
If you’ve set up a new outdoor dining area, try to add some of the same thoughtful touches used when planning your interior, even if it’s just a small element like adding table lighting. It’s the little details that really stand out, especially to people that have been stuck at home!
