INFRASTRUCTURE
Since 1891
INFRASTRUCTURE
Since 1891COMSA was founded in 1891 in Reus (Tarragona). During its first few years, the company focused on track work and
station renovation and soon won recognition as one of the leading rail companies of the time. Many years later, and
coinciding with a generational handover, it diversified its business activities into other areas of civil engineering and
began constructing bridges, roads, buildings, etc.
Early in the 60’s the third generation of the family started to lead the company, driving the mechanisation of
the track works. In that decade COMSA also initiated its expansion throughout Spain. In the 80’s the company
consolidated its presence across the country, participating in the first Spanish high-speed project (Madrid-Sevilla
line).
COMSA internationalised its activity in the 90’s, starting with Portugal, and quickly expanded its presence to other
countries in Europe and Latin America, coinciding with the arrival of the fourth generation. Nowadays, COMSA
gathers a 120 years experience that affirms its capacity to undertake all types of projects in railways, roads, ports,
airports, hydraulic infrastructures and buildings.
Committed to sustainable growth and innovation, COMSA is dedicated to quality, professionalism and client
satisfaction.
COMSA is the infrastructure construction and maintenance company of COMSA EMTE, one of Spain’s top groups in integrated infrastructures, engineering, environment and technology.
In the field of Infrastructures, COMSA EMTE all over the world works through the following companies:

The company offers a complete service in the railway sector, ranging from the initial study and design to the building and maintenance of infrastructure and superstructure.
INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS
COMSA harmonises the execution of its infrastructure projects with the running of the railway lines. This means that projects are developed under circulating traffic conditions, on night shifts and during short periods thus causing as little disruption as possible. This area of activity includes railway network modernisation projects, signal panel replacement, and elimination of level crossings or bridge modernisation projects, among others.
TRACK RENOVATION
COMSA avails of track renovation equipment operating with both continuous and discontinuous systems, thereby minimising work times and enabling railway traffic to run without disruption.
MAINTENANCE PROJECTS
COMSA uses latest generation equipment and systems to perform maintenance work on railway tracks, with minimum impact to rail circulation. Cleaning, replacing or undercutting ballast to improve track quality and safety is carried out using high performance equipment.

BUILDING THE INFRASTRUCTURE
The routing demands of high-speed train lines lead to them being highly difficult and technically complex projects.
Thanks to the experience it has gained on projects of this kind over the years, COMSA has developed infrastructure projects on all of Spain’s high-speed train lines to the highest standards.
BUILDING THE SUPERSTRUCTURE
In order to develop a new route with the demanding time constraints and high level of quality required by high speed train lines, new work methods must be designed and a fleet of modern machinery, that is compatible with European track gauge, must be made available..
COMSA meets all of these requirements and has an extensive portfolio of national and international activity. It has installed the new tracks for the Madrid-Seville and Córdoba-Malaga-Zaragoza-Barcelona-French border lines. Worldwide, high-speed railway infrastructures have also been put in place in Australia, Italy and Taiwan.

TUNNELSCOMSA constructs tunnels for railways, roads and water, among other infrastructures. Depending on the terrain, the company employs the construction methods that will ensure the greatest safety, speed and quality for the tunnel, with minimal impact on nearby structures. Supported by advanced monitoring technology, the company conducts a thorough survey of the ground deformations in sections of any diameter, both in excavations by blasting and also by mechanical means, with tunnelling machines, cut and cover tunnels and box jacking.
COMSA also provides wells for tunnel ventilation systems, underground chambers, and installation of lifts for access to metro and railway stations. The company also constructs small diameter tunnels for hydraulic works and industrial installations, access shafts to underground stations, two-tube tunnel connections, emergency galleries in major rail and road tunnels and in ventilation systems, etc.
In this area COMSA also operates through Nortúnel, a company specialising in the construction of tunnels and underground works. In recent years both companies have carried out major projects, such as the Vielha tunnel (Lleida), the Les Fosses tunnel (Girona) and several rail tunnels along the Spanish high-speed lines.

BRIDGESDuring the last 15 years COMSA has built over 30 kilometres of bridges and viaducts for road, rail and walkways. COMSA’s projects include straight section and girder bridges, arch bridges, cable-stayed and suspension bridges. Their expertise covers the most modern materials in bridge construction (concrete, steel and FRP composite bridges). In addition to the more common construction methods, with prefabricated components and construction “in situ” on falsework, COMSA has accumulated valuable experience in highly complex construction procedures: decks constructed with beam launching, using movable formwork, jacking, and by using progressive cantilever.
Throughout its history, the company has participated in the construction of unique works that have been recognised for their innovation, among those are the Deza Viaduct, with a length of 1,175 meters (commendation in the Construmat Awards for civil engineering), the Bac de Roda and Felip II bridges (FAD award), and the Amposta Bridge, which, with a span of 135 metres, was for many years the largest span suspension bridge in Spain.
Among the most recent projects the cable-stayed bridges stand out. The Teror Viaduct in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is an extradosed bridge built by progressive cantilever using a formwork carriage capable of building segments of 6 m in length. In the same category is the Prince of Viana Bridge in Lleida, which stands out for its design with sloping pylons.

INNOVATIONCOMSA have been carrying out R&D&i projects almost since it was founded over 120 years ago. The company currently has an R&D&i Management System that has been recognised by AENOR as satisfying the UNE 166002 standard, and has consequently achieved the relevant certification, as a system of work that ensures proper management of the R&D&i projects in the COMSA portfolio.
With the implementation of this Management System, the company guarantees that, through technological monitoring, the latest technologies become known and are implemented in their projects. COMSA has a Technical Area specifically dedicated to the identification, opportunity analysis and implementation and monitoring of R&D&i projects. This department is involved in the process of training technical staff, in drafting procedures and in partnerships to solve technical problems.
With the desire to remain among the leading innovative companies in the construction sector, COMSA has established three strategic pillars for its R&D&i policies. The first of these focuses on the development, testing and implementation of new materials that combine increased technical performance and durability with an important contribution to environmental conservation through waste recovery. The second is aimed at optimising existing technology and the design of new machinery and construction methods in the railway sector that systematically result in higher productivity and quality in the execution of the works. The third pillar is based on continually striving for the best practices and systems of occupational risk prevention as part of COMSA’s commitment to the safety of its workers.
