IMPORTANT 2017 DATES
Treasure Bible Reading: Matthew 13:44-45
‘The Kingdom of heaven is like this. A man happens to find a treasure
hidden in the ground. He covers it up again, and is so happy that he goes
and sells everything he has, and then goes back and buys that piece of
land. Also, the Kingdom of heaven is like this. A man is looking for fine
pearls, and when he finds one that is usually fine, he goes and sells
everything he has, and buys that pearl.’
If you want to own treasure,
there are three steps to
getting it. First, you have to be
on the lookout for it, because
it’s not always obvious where
it is. Second, you have to
know what you are looking
for. Third, when you find it, you
have to be prepared to make a considerable investment in
order to secure it.
That’s how it is with the things of God too. Unless you are
genuinely searching for God, or are open to His truth, you are
likely to miss out altogether. And you have to have some
idea of what really does come from God, and what is merely
worthless. When you do find the great treasure God has to
offer, you need to use every means available to you to
secure it, because it’s worth more than anything else you
possess.
And what is that treasure? It’s the good news of God’s love
and His plan for saving His fallen world. Hold on to it for dear
life.

Being courageous is something we often talk about with the
students at St John’s as it is one of our key elements from the
Learner Profile. We are always aiming to set up learning
environments that will promote some risk taking, that will give
opportunity to try something that hasn’t been tried before
and to possibly learn more about something or learn
something new that will help us to make sense of what we
already know. One lovely example I wish to share with you is
the following true story.
Each morning as I greet families out in the car park, I get the
opportunity to say good morning. It is a lovely way to get to know our families in an informal
way. Each morning one of our new Foundation students gets out of her car with her mum
and together they say good morning to me and then walk on up to the classroom. This all
changed last week.
Mum pulled into the school driveway, but instead of driving through to find a park, she
stopped with the other cars that were in the line. Out hopped young Kennedy Geister, who
grabbed her bag and said good bye to mum and walked off to her classroom by herself. I
was told by mum that it had been explained to her, she was now a big girl and could go into
school by herself. I’m not sure that mum was coping with this idea, however, as I reflect on
this scenario I see a young student who is being very courageous, wanting to take a risk and
seeing what it is like to be a more independent student at St John’s. She has a smile on her
face knowing she has had some success in being courageous each morning last week.
We know that we are never guaranteed success each time we are courageous, however
that should never stop us from taking risks. God wants us to be the best we can be so that we
can share who we are with those around us in a positive way. We all need to sometimes be
just like Miss Kennedy and take a risk and give things a go.
Upper Primary Assembly
I would like to thank our Year Six and Seven students and their teachers, Mrs Kleinig and Mrs
Hambour, for the fantastic assembly they prepared and presented to the school last Friday. It
is always great to witness and share the learning that has taken place in classrooms. As an IB
school it is always a blessing to see the transdisciplinary learning occurring across all
curriculum areas.

Thank you Pastor Leon
At Chapel on Tuesday, we were privileged to have
Pastor Leon Rosenberg from the Carlsruhe Saddleworth
Parish lead our students and staff in worship. Pastor
Leon’s message to us was, “Remember who you are.”
He used the example of the importance of washing our
faces regularly, even when we don’t think this is
needed, to relate to the importance of remembering
our baptism and that we are God’s children. To
highlight this, Pastor Leon presented each person
present with a wooden disc in the shape of a foot which had water droplets and
‘rwya’ (remember who you are) inscribed on it. He encouraged the children to use this disc
to remind each of them of what God has done through baptism and how they belong to
God’s family. Pastor Leon actually spent many hours cutting out the wooden discs and
inscribing them and so we thank him for his thoughtfulness and time.
Two of the Pastoral Assistants of St John’s Congregation, Eudunda worshipped with us at
Chapel and we thank them for their attendance and encourage other members of our Parish
to do likewise.
Excerpts from the Parent Information Evening
For Work, Health and Safety purposes, it is expected that all visitors, including parent helpers
sign in and out as they enter and exit our school grounds at the front office.
If you come into the school grounds for any reason eg helping with reading or excursions,
throughout the school day please go via our front office to sign in and out.
Pupil Free Day at the Eudunda Area School
A reminder that there is a pupil free day at the Eudunda Area School next Wednesday 22
March 2017 which means there will be NO DECD buses operating. Please make alternative
arrangements for your children to be at school. The St John’s and Robertstown buses will run as
normal.
Harmony Day
Next Tuesday we will be celebrating Harmony Day where classes will be involved in different
activities throughout the day. This year’s theme is “Everyone belongs—celebrating cultural
diversity.” Please chat with your children about this day so that they can share with you what
they were involved with.

possibility of warm weather occurring early in Term Two, students may wear either summer or

before the changeover.

Central Idea: Learning about who we are gives us an insight into our culture and how we belong
Our first Unit of Inquiry for the year contained several different subject areas which has enabled us to gain a
better understanding of our culture and how we belong. The students began the unit by recording on a Y
chart what they believe an Australian is. We watched the movie ‘Crocodile Dundee’ and recorded the
Australian culture that was expressed. Students then brought in an item from home that reflected their values
and opinions of Australia’s culture; students wrote about this and then shared their information orally to the
class. In Christian Studies the students have viewed different clips that have helped them to see and
understand how we came to and continue to belong to God’s family. In Health lessons so far we have been
focussing on strategies to choose appropriate friends and working in groups. Our Art lessons have included
drawing a ‘selfie’ and filling in a sheet titled ‘Expressions all about me.’ The students have sourced and
redrawn a picture of where they feel they belong in Australia. We have just returned from our class camp to
Lake Bonney where students were given an opportunity to participate in a number of activities that helped
develop an understanding of their culture and sense of belonging which is an important part of this unit.
Below are some photos from camp.

On Tuesday 14 March 2017, the Year Four/Five and Year Six/Seven classes were
fortunate to have Matt McDonnell talk to them regarding cybersafety and bullying.
He provided very informative information and gave the children plenty to think about.
We thank Matt very much for taking the time out of his busy schedule to speak with
our students.
