Chapter 3: Electric Vehicles – Technology & Infrastructure
What this chapter is all about: This chapter brings you up-to-date on the battery and powertrain ecosystem – batteries, motors, BMS and the EV charging infrastructure. Latest inputs (from India and international) on each of these technology dimensions of the EV ecosystem are provided.
Some inputs and insights from this chapter
Electric vehicles comprise the following components that are distinct from conventional ICE -
battery, battery management systems, motor, drive system, cooling systems and EV charging
infrastructure
International electric car brands, like the Volt or Tesla, use liquid cooling for the batteries
whereas Nissan LEAF has air cooled batteries, hence uses only a small radiator to cool the car’s
motor. It probably also uses a cooler for the A/C as well.
Electric vehicles have planetary gear sets and torque converters instead of clutch packs
The Battery Management System ensures that the energy of the battery is optimized to power
the product, by minimizing the risk of damaging the battery and controlling the charging and
discharging process of the battery
Induction motor and BLDC are the prominent types of motors used by top EV companies like
Tata, Mahindra & Tesla
