New Delhi (UNI)India on Tuesday summoned Pak-

istan High Commission’s Charge d’Affaires Syed Haidar Shah and in-formed him about the government’sdecision to reduce the strength ofstaff by 50 per cent here as the offi-cials have found to be involved inacts of espionage and maintaineddealings with terrorist organisations.

India will also reduce its presencein Islamabad to the same propor-tion. The decision will be imple-mented in seven days.

‘Charge d’ Affaires of Pakistan wassummoned today to the Ministry ofExternal Affairs and informed thatIndia had repeatedly expressed con-cern about the activities of officialsof his High Commission,’ the Min-istry said in a statement here.

On May 31, two officials of Pak-istan High Commission were caughtred-handed and expelled in espi-onage case.

‘While their officials indulged inactions that are not in conformitywith their privileged status in theHigh Commission, Pakistan has inparallel engaged in a sustained cam-paign to intimidate the officials ofthe Indian High Commission in Is-lamabad from carrying on their legit-

imate diplomatic functions,’ itadded.

The Ministry also said that the re-cent abduction at gunpoint of twoIndian officials and their severe ill-treatment underlines the extent towhich Pakistan has gone in that di-rection.

These officials, who have re-turned to India on June 22, have pro-vided graphic details of the barbarictreatment that they experienced atthe hands of Pakistani agencies.

The behaviour of Pakistan and itsofficials is not in conformity with theVienna Convention and bilateralagreements on the treatment ofdiplomatic and consular officials. Onthe contrary, it is an intrinsic ele-ment of a larger policy of supportingcross-border violence and terrorism,it said.
