Domestic Nuclear Detection OfficeIn FY 2009, the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will invest, in partnership with the National Science Foundation (NSF), in frontier research at academic institutions. This transformational research effort will be focused on detection systems, individual sensors or other research that is potentially relevant to the detection of nuclear weapons, special nuclear material, radiation dispersal devices and related threats.

NGA University Research Initiatives (NURI)
The NGA University Research Initiatives (NURI) program supports geospatial intelligence research through annual solicitation for basic research proposals from US academic institutions. The solicitation topics are selected to provide the scientific basis for advanced and applied research in NGA core disciplines. Each year, proposals are competitively selected for two-year research grants; each grant also provides for three optional one-year extensions for research transition. Institutions are encouraged to involve graduate students in the research projects. The stimulation of graduate programs in geospatial intelligence-related disciplines is an additional benefit to the basic geospatial intelligence research conducted under the NURI program.
In the FY09 competition, NGA expects to make from eight to nine new awards this year for research as described herein.
The level of each award is anticipated to be a two-year base at up to $150,000 per year with up to three one-year options valued at up to $150,000 per option year.
For the FY09 competition the proposal due date was April 30, 2009
The PI does not have to be a U.S. citizen.

AREAS OF FOCUSThrough the IC CAE Program, aspiring college students have the opportunity to obtain the background, knowledge and skills to lead future generations of IC professionals.Promoting General Competencies Participating colleges and universities are required to promote general competencies across a broad range of professional skill sets which will prove useful in a business environment. These include: Data Collection, Research, Analysis, Critical Thinking, Communications, Management, and Strategy and OperationsIn cultivating these critical skill sets, participating colleges and universities will:
Sponsor pre-collegiate outreach in their geographic areaBuild awareness about IC optionsPromote a positive image of public serviceDevelop curricula focusing on one or two of the focus areas
The Centers of Academic Excellence grant program provides partnership opportunities for the IC with colleges and universities. Grant funding is awarded based upon merit competition and the CAE Program reserves the right to not make any grant awards. Current plans are to disseminate a proposal request to establish additional IC Centers of Academic Excellence through grant funding awards in late 2010 or early 2011, based on the availability of funding, for the 2011-2012 academic year.
