Implant System Overview

Straumann Company Profile••

Headquarters: Basel, SwitzerlandFounded in 1954, with the introduction of the firstone stage dental implant in 1974“Made in Switzerland”(engineering and implantproduction)More than 35 years of clinical evidence with over 100scientific publications per year that meet the higheststandards of researchThe Straumann group currently employs approximately 3,400 people worldwide and its products and services areavailable in more than 70 countries through its broadnetwork of distribution subsidiaries and partners*Six production sites for implants, biomaterials and CAD/CAM in Europe, the United States and JapanMore than 15 million implants placed worldwide*

Implant Materials

––

The Straumann system has two options ofmaterials used:

TitaniumRoxolid

Titanium

• Grade 4 titanium used - Biocompatible in tissues - Adequate physical and mechanical

properties

Roxolid

…a new metallic material for implants…homogenous titanium alloy: composed oftitanium and zirconium

Excellent strength propertiesOutstanding osseointegration especiallywhen combined with SLActive®

Fatigue strength of Roxolid® is very high

Advantages

Confidence when placing small diameter implants

Can use a thinner diamter implant in posterior areas which see higherforce and would traditionally require a larger and stronger Ti implant

Designed to increase patients’ acceptance of implant treatment

More treatment options with smaller implants

Preserves bone and reduces invasive grafting procedures

Less invasive procedures*increases patient acceptance

Surfaces

••

SLASLActive

SLA Surface•

Our SLA® surface was commerciallylaunched in 1998 and is one of the mostdocumented rough surfaces in implantology. The SLA® surface is produced using alarge-grit sandblasting technique thatgenerates a macro-roughness on thetitanium surface. This is followed by acid-etching thatsuperposes a micro-roughness. Theresulting topography offers an idealstructure for cell attachment.

A RELIABLE AND SCIENTIFICALLYWELL-DOCUMENTED SURFACE

Straumann SLA surface is one of the mostdocumented surfaces in dental implantology. In these long-term studies, survival rates reachedbetween 95% to 99% and even in patients withmoderate or severe periodontal diseases an implantsurvival rate of 97% was reported.SLA surface shows low prevalence of peri-implantitis.More than 100 clinical and preclinical SLA studiespublished in last 20 years5 peer-reviewed publications with 10 years of follow-up data on Straumann implants and prosthetics

SLActive•

Introduced in 2005, this unique and clinically provendental implant surface is the first to combinechemical activity with hydrophilic properties.SLActive® is designed to improve safety andpredictability even in challenging situations.Besides simplifying treatment, it significantlyreduces the healing period from 6–8 to 3–4 weeks.Safer and faster treatment in 3–4weeks for allindicationsHigher treatment predictability even withchallenging proceduresBroadening treatment potential

SLActive is a surface that is the same SLsurface but it packed in a clean room withNitrogen gas environment and it doesn’tcome in contact with other gases. This prevents an carbon atoms from beingdeposited onto the implant surface whichis why it has a better osteoinductivecapacityIt is stored in a saline solution and thedoctor removes it from the saline and canuse it within 15 minutes.

SLActive® / SLA production

Conventional surface treatment

A passive layer (hydrocarbons) formswhen elements from the atmosphere aredeposited onto the implant surface.

Body has to remove thepassive layer forosseointegration

SLActive treatment

The nitrogen atmosphere prevents passivatingelements from coming into contact with theimplant surface. The surface is kept active and hydrophilic.

Body can immediatelyaccess the active surfacefor osseointegration

The Novaloc® Retentive System for hybrid dentures offers aninnovative car- bon-based abutment coating (amorphousdiamond-like carbon1) with excel- lent wear resistance, overcoming up to 60° implant divergence. Both a straight and a15° angled abutment, available in various gingiva heights, cover abroad range of clinical implant situations. Together with itsdurable PEEK2 matrices, the Novaloc® Retentive System providesa reliable connection that endures. This results in lowmaintenance and high patient comfort.

Novaloc (similar to Locator)

As the name implies, “amorphous diamond-like carbon” (ADLC) isa class of carbon bonds which displays several of the desirablequalities of a diamond. ADLC coatings are commonly used in themedical device field (e.g. hip joints) and reduce abrasive wearprolonging the lifetime of the medical appliance.
