THE BASICS(or what do to after turning on your computer) • Find iMovie, looks like this• Import Video (source can be your phone, or

the camera from your mac)

• Start New Project• iMovie Tools (more on this in other slides)

 

IMPORT VIDEO

•File > Import > Movie•Import formats that directly import into iMovie: 3gp, m4v, avchd, mp4, mov, h.264, dv

USING A CAMERATO IMPORT• Connect camera to computer• Turn camera on & set to “PC Connect

mode”• Select video clips to import:• For all clips: “Automatic” & Click “Import

All”• For specific clips: “Manual”, Deselect the

clips you don’t want to import & Click “Import Checked”

IMPORT VIDEO

• Import Video: Event Library• Event Library—iMovie generates

Events in the same way as iPhoto does—this is the footage you use to create movie projects

• Allows you to group video into useful named categories

PROJECTS VS. EVENTS

EVENT is how Apple organizes clips, typically by date.

Clips shot on the same day appear under the same event and titled with the date they were imported—New Event 10–10–15, for example.

Events are listed in iMovie’s Event Library pane. When selected, event, contents appear in the Event Browser, which you can find to the right of the Event Library. (I’ll cover the topography of the iMovie interface shortly.)

A project is the movie that you’ll assemble from your clips. So, using a baking analogy, events and their clips are the movie’s flour, salt, water, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla, almond extract, and chocolate chips. A project is the resulting big cookie

NEW PROJECTProject: Getting Started Choose File > New Project

Project Themes>No Theme(Themes automatically insert titles &

NEW PROJECT Name your project Aspect Ratio (width & height of your

Frame Rate>same used to shoot video (30fps)

CLIP TIMMERAllows you to change the duration of a clip by removing unwanted frames

Adjust by dragging on the edges of the selection Click on Done

CLIP ADJUSTMENT -STABILIZATION

• Smooth the shaky portions of your video• Marks the footage that contains people• For best results, use when project is

complete

SELECTING AUDIO• iTunes

• iMovie & Sound Effects

• GarageBand

• Drag & drop audio file into Project Area

• Trim sound>drag on edges of the green icon to resize

Inspector: Audio Adjustment • Adjust Volume

• Ducking: gives the selected audio priority over other audio tracks

• Fade

• Normalize: brings loudest part of audio clip to 100% w/o distortion

ADJUSTING AUDIO

Choose Clip>Edit>Detach Audio

Audio track (green)– Select & Move– Select & Delete– Audio Adjustment

VIDEO ADJUSTMENT• Adjust image quality

• Levels: B&W levels

• Exposure: shadows & highlights

• Brightness: overall light level

• Contrast: relative contrast of light & dark tones

• Saturation: color intensity

ADDING TITLES• Choose Title style> Drag

& drop into video clip

• Edit Title>Select blue bar above clip

• Viewer>Click on placeholder text>Enter your own text

• Click on Done

ADDING TRANSITIONSChoose Transition>Drag & drop between two clips

Transition will display as a gray box between the two clips

Change duration> Transition Adjustments>Enter the desired duration>Click OK
