Gli uomini sono ridotti a

cornice marginale. Il punto

focale degli scatti di Helmut Newton

sono le donne. Statuarie, di potere, al

limite del sadomaso. Se si possono

identificare come un oggetto sessuale, è

perché l’hanno deciso loro. Solitamente

ritratte in paesaggi desolati, inospitali,

fuori dai luoghi abituali. Il periodo più

eccitante della carriera del fotografo, tra

la metà degli Anni ’60 e i primi ’80,

quello in cui il genio è asceso al gotha

della moda, è illustrato attraverso le sue

opere più belle nel libro World withoutMen, edito da Taschen. Per ogni shoot ci

sono aneddoti e descrizioni specifiche

dello stesso Newton: per capire il lavoro

che sta dietro a ogni immagine. Il genio

che ha cambiato la fotografia fashion

raramente scattava negli studi, preferiva

la strada. I suoi scenari sono controversi,

inconsueti, l’illuminazione è netta,

sfacciata. Il risultato è sempre

suggestivo. Uno dei grandi maestri della

fotografia visto attraverso i suoi clic, al

photographs were the women. Imposing,powerful and bordering on thesadomasochistic. If they are recognisableas sexual objects, it is because theydecided to be for themselves. Usuallyportrayed in desolate, inhospitable andstrange landscapes. The most excitingpart of Newton’s career, between the mid-sixties and early eighties when his geniusreached the highest echelons of thefashion world, is illustrated by his mostbeautiful photos in the book World

without Men, published by Taschen. Itincludes Newton’s own anecdotes anddescriptions of every shoot to helpunderstand the work involved in eachpicture. This genius, who changedfashion photography forever, rarelyworked in a studio but preferred to beoutside. His settings are controversial,unusual, sharply lit and shameless. Theresult is always evocative. One of thegreatest masters of photography seenthrough his photographs of women.
