PART1SPEAKINGESSENTIALSWhat does the word “essential” mean? It means “very important, highlycritical, necessary”

Theskills thatyoulearnforpart1speakingare100%thefoundationofpart2andpart3speaking.Ifyoudoapoorjobinpart1speaking,theexaminerwillbesupposedtogiveyoujusta5.0beforeyouhavedonepart2&part3speaking.

Whenitcomestopart1speaking,Iwouldsaythatyouneedtorememberthesethings:

Number1:Neveranswerwithonlyoneword.Alwaysusecompletesentencesorphrases.

Iftheyaskyou“doyouliketoread?”

Ifyoujustsay:yes

Well, your answerhasnogrammar, nopronunciation, novocabulary. All theyknowis“youliketoread”.

Whatisthebetteranswerof“doyouliketoread?”

Answer:Yes,Iwouldloveto…

Or: no, reading is boring. I think that people who read are quite stupid.Frankly,Ithinktheyshouldbedoingmorefunthingslikemotorbikeracingorknifefighting…

Thisanswerisbetter.Youmightdisagreebecausetheanswersoundsabitrude,andittalksalotaboutabadlifestyle(motorbikeracing,knifefighting).However,theexaminerisnotgoingtogiveyouabandscorebasedonhowniceapersonyouare,theywillgiveyouabandscorebasedonyourEnglishability.Sobesurethatyougivethemwhattheywant.

Number2:youneedtoshowtheexaminersomethingorsomethingsaboutyourEnglish,andthatcanbesomethingaboutyourgrammar,somethingaboutyourvocabulary,somethingabouttheorganizationofyouranswer,andmaybesomethingaboutyourpronunciation.

Forexample,iftheyaskyou“doyoulikewatchingTV?”

www.tienganhedu.com

Andyousay:ofcourse,IlovewatchingTV.

Whenyousay“Ilove...”youstressedtheword“love”.Thatmeansyou’veshownsomethingaboutyourpronunciation.

Thesearethingsyouneedtothinkabout:answerthequestionandextendyouranswer .ShowsomethingaboutyourEnglishability.Foreachquestion, try toproduce your answer in different ways to show different things about yourspeaking.Thereare somebasic thingsyoucando rightaway.Firstofall,youadddetailsbyusingthosebasicquestionsinEnglish:“who”,“what”,“when”,“where”,“why”,“how”,“howoften”,“howmuch”,etc.

Soiftheyaskyou“doyoulikewatchingTV?”

Youcansay:Yes,I lovewatchingTV.IreallyloveMr.Bean.HeismyfavoriteTVcharacter.IoftenwatchTVwithmyfamilyinthelivingroomontheweekend.

Oriftheyaskyou“doyoulikereadingbooks?”

Youcansay:yes, Ireally lovereadingbooksmainlybecause it’ssorelaxing. Irememberwhen Iwas inhigh school,my teachergavemea reallygoodbookandinspiredmetoreadmoreandmore.

Beforeansweringthequestion,makesureyoupayattentiontothequestiontype,theverbtense(“doyouliketoread?”or“didyouliketoreadwhenyouwereachild?”Or“whatbookwouldyouliketoread?”).Becarefulaboutthis.

Forexample:“Doyoulikereadingbooks?”

What’stheverbtenseofthisquestion?Presenttense.

Answer: Yes, I really love reading books mainly because it’s so relaxing. IrememberwhenIwasinhighschool, myteachergavemeareallygoodbookandinspiredmetoreadmoreandmore.

DidIanswerthequestion?

Yes,andthenIswitchedfrompresenttensetopasttense.Thatissomethingelseyoucando.Youcandoalotofthingswhenitcomestoextendingyouranswer;youcanusenon-definingrelativeclausestoaddextrainformationaboutanythingyouwanttosay.Sothinkaboutthis.

www.tienganhedu.com

Icansay“Ireallyenjoyreadingcomicbooks.Thesebooksareveryentertaining.”(2sentences)

ButIcancombinethemandmake1sentencebyusinganon-definingrelativeclause.

“Ireallylovereadingcomicbooks,whichareveryentertaining.”

LikeIsaid,youcanchangetheverbtense.

Iftheyaskyou“didyouenjoyreadingbookswhenyouwereachild?”

What’stheverbtenseofthisquestion?Pasttense,right?

So,besureyouanswerthequestion,butgoaheadandswitchtheverbtenseifyouwant.

Youcansay:Tobehonest,Ididn’treallylikereadingsomuchwhenIwasakid.Butnowadays,I’mprettykeenonreadingmysterynovels.Actually,I’mgoingtothebookstoreaftertheclasstonight,andI’llbuysomemysterynovels.

SoIjustgavetheexaminertheanswerusingpasttense,presenttenseandfuturetense.

You can use the adverbs of frequency . You can talk abouthow often orhowrarelyyoudosomething.Usea rangeadverbsof frequencyandbecarefulnotjustgivingtheadverbbacktotheexaminer.

Forexample,iftheyaskyou“whatdoyouusuallydoontheweekend?”

Youshouldn’tsay:ontheweekend,Iusually.

That’s fine, proper grammar, but if youwant to get a high score, you shouldchange“usually”into“frequently”or“often”.Youshouldparaphraseit.

Stayawayfromusing100%and0%statementlikealways,never,etc.

Example1:“Whatdoyoudoontheweekend?”

Answer:Ialwaysgotothemallandtalktoeveryone

“Alwaysgo to themall?”does this sound like accurate communication? Is itpossibletoalwaysgothemalleveryweekend?Thatsoundsalittlestrange.

www.tienganhedu.com

Example2:“Whatdoyoudoontheweekend?”

Answer:Ialwaysdomyhomework.

Neverhaveaweekendoff?Alwaysto100%of the timeontheweekendyoudoyourhomework?Thatdoesn’tsoundlikeaccurate.

Example3:“doyoulikefastfood?”

Answer:Tobehonest,it’sdisgusting,Inevereatit.

Nevereatfastfood?Thatdoesn’tsoundlikeaccurate.

So I would say that you should be very careful of using these adverbs offrequencyalwaysandneverinyouranswers.

Paraphrasing:youcanusesynonymsandparallelexpressions to paraphrasethequestioninyouranswer.

Forexample,iftheyaskyou“whatdidyouliketoreadasachild?”

It’sveryeasytogetintothebadhabitifyousay“Asachild,Iliketoread.”

Yourgrammarisok,however,yourvocabularyscoreislowbecauseyoudidn’tshowtheexamineryourvocabulary,youborrowedhisvocabulary,andyouuseditinyouranswer.

Soiftheyaskyou“whatdidyouliketoreadasachild?”

Youshouldparaphraseyouranswerlike“whenIwasakid, I lovereading…”it’smuchbetter.

Oryoucansay“backthen,Ienjoyedreading…”

“Backthen”inthiscasemeans“whenIwasachild”

Oryoucanparaphraseyouranswerbysaying:Yes,Iloveit.Infact,Ihaveenjoyedreading.IhavebeenreadingmysterynovelswhenIwasateenager.(Iusedpresent,presentperfect,presentperfectcontinuousinmyanswer).

Letmegiveyouanotherexamplehere.

Iftheyaskyou“whatdoyoudoinyourfreetime?”

www.tienganhedu.com

Youshouldparaphraseyouranswerbysaying:“Inmyleisuretime/inmysparetime,Ilovetoplaygames…”

Oryoucansay“whenIamnotworking,Iliketoreadbooks.”

Oryoucansay“well,oneofmyhobbiesisfishing.”

Paraphrasingstatementsaboutfavoritethings/people

Iftheyaskyou“What’syourfavoritefoodtoeat?”

Ifyouanswerlikethis“Myfavorite fooddefinitely isXbecause…” ,youwillnotgetahighscorebecauseyoudon’tparaphrase.

Instead,youcanusethisstructure“TheXIlovethemostis…”toanswerthisquestion“what’syourfavoriteX…?”

Example:what’syourfavoriteTVshow?

Youcansay:TheTVshowIlovethemostis…

Whatisyourfavoriteplacetovisit?

Youcansay:ThecityIlovethemostisNewYork…

So you need to practice this structure, because if the examiner gives you a“favorite”question, thenyouknowhowtoansweritexcellently.

Ontheotherhand,iftheyaskyou“What’syourleastfavoritefoodtoeat?

Youwouldsay:TheXIlovetheleastis…orIreallydislike…

“What’syourleastfavoritefoodtoeat?

You can say:Well, the food I love the least is Kimchi, I generally don’t likeKoreanfood….
