ICELAND
OUR EXPEDITION OPENS ICELAND TO YOU
Most Icelanders can trace their lineage back to set-tlement of the country and it’s fascinating to hear them meet one another and discuss how they may or may not be related, as a first topic of conversation.”
— JEN MARTIN, Director of Expedition Development
“
WHERE AWESOME IS
WWW.EXPEDITIONS.COM 3
Our Director of Expedition Development,
Jen Martin, explains why Iceland is one of
her favorite expedition destinations:
“WHEN VISITORS DIVE DEEPER INTO ICELAND, THEY FIND SO
much more than they intended or expected. It is one of the
few destinations in the world that has a little bit of every-
thing. It’s stunningly beautiful: giant waterfalls; colorful mud
pots; brilliant green hillsides; blue, ice-filled lagoons; massive
glaciers; and stark, imposing mountains. It seems that most
visitors know these things, and nature is often the primary
reason that they come. But many only see Reykjavík and its
outer environs. While these are worthy destinations, the real
heart of the country is in its remote landscapes, vast interior,
and hard-to-reach coastal gems. Traveling by ship opens up
so many possibilities. It means coming ashore in small towns
and villages that were isolated and only accessible by water
up until the late 20th century. It means arriving by Zodiac at
the base of world-class waterfalls that are hours away from
anything if you are arriving by car or bus. It means sailing
into fjords from the open ocean and watching them narrow
as you approach.”

departures, clockwise from top left: Hrund Gunnesteinsdottir filmmaker, entrepreneur, & playwright; Silja Ómarsdóttir women’s & human rights advocate; Thóra Arnórsdóttir candidate for icelandic president in 2012; Sandra Snæbjörnsdóttir carbfix geologist working on mitigating climate change.
WE BELIEVE IN CREATING EXPERIENCES, NOT SIMPLY MEDIATING LOCAL EXCURSIONS
4
“WE SET OUT FROM REYKJAVÍK AND DROVE ALL THE WAY TO
Höfn, covering approximately 1,564 miles. Our main goal was
to come up with new ideas and locations where no other ship
has gone before—to maximize the guest experience, specifically
through up-close, personal, expedition-style opportunities
involving kayaking and hiking. We have a lot of experience in
Iceland, having conducted successful expeditions for some
time. And Sven Lindblad, Jen Martin and Jacob Edgar have
really developed the kinds of relationships that take our guests
deep inside. Now, we can further re-shape the experience for
our guests, replacing locations where all the other companies
go with genuine discoveries: fascinating, remote places that
our small ship, equipped for exploring, enables us to reach. So,
more adventurous exploring, fewer encounters with tour buses
and other tourists. While our guests will still experience the
iconic sites everyone wants to see, they’ll discover unimagined
aspects of the country, too. I can’t wait to show them gems like
Vigur Island, bursting with summer life. Puffins on rocks with
mouths full of fish. Black guillemots nesting in rock walls. Arctic
terns dive-bombing our ‘tern deterrent’ flagsticks held overhead,
while humpbacks surface in the near distance.”
—LUCHO VERDESOTO, Expedition Leader
DISCOVERY BY DESIGN
Reconnaissance missions are the heart of what we do, the sweat equity that’s built into our expeditions. While it would be easier to sit at HQ with maps, atlases and a list of ground operators to set up excursions, we believe in exploring. Because Iceland is so visited, it’s particularly challenging to find unique and thrilling opportunities for our guests. So we sent out veteran Expedition Leaders Lucho Verdesoto and Peter Wilson to hone our expeditions. This is a glimpse of their mission and what excites them.”

VOLCANOES AREN’T THE ONLY HOT SPOTS IN ICELAND, THE MUSIC SCENE IS TOO
WITH A POPULATION OF JUST OVER 300,000 PEOPLE, ICELAND
has had an outsized influence on global music. As the world’s
fascination with it has grown, Iceland’s musical reputation
has also played a part in the country’s tourism boom. Travel
with us in 2019 and you will hear some of Iceland’s leading
musicians. Our ethnomusicologist, Jacob Edgar, has curated
an exceptional line-up, and each Iceland itinerary will feature
performances by at least two artists from this list.
HAUNTING HARMONIES: YLJA, comprising two female
singer/guitarists, performs moving melodies in Icelandic.
STORIES AND SONGS: Known for his charming stage
persona, SVAVAR KNÚTUR weaves compelling tales about
rural Icelandic life.
AN ETHEREAL EXPERIENCE: Singer-songwriter MYRRA RÓS
is known for her exquisite voice and enthralling live shows.
CLASSIC YET MODERN: ÁRSTÍÐIR blends classical influenc-
es with folk rock and chamber pop, sending audiences on a
compelling journey.
NORTH STAR: Hailing from a valley in northern Iceland,
singer/songwriter ÖSP ELDJÁRN is known for concerts of
striking emotional power.
6 1.800.EXPEDITION (1.800.397.3348)
I have focused on young Icelandic singers and songwriters who are incorporating their rich folk traditions into new, hip contexts. Icelandic music is full of haunting melodies and harmonies that seem to capture the mood of cold winds blowing across harsh, volcanic landscapes and the glistening magic of northern lights. These are songs born from the ancient sagas and folk tales of witches, goblins and elves that roam the countryside. Music, like wine, has a “terroir,” an innate quality that reflects the environment in which it was cultivated, and Iceland music will fill your soul with a sense of place.”
— JACOB EDGAR Expedition Ethnomusicologist

Lights; to offering scenic Zodiac rides, hiking at your pace,

to see, do, and absorb all the extraordinary experiences—in

AN ADVENTURE THAT’S THE SUM OF FASCINATING PARTS
ICELAND’S GEOLOGY IN ALL ITS MANIFESTATIONS—
glaciers, thundering waterfalls, immense cliffs, geothermal
springs, boiling mud pots, and rock and lava-scapes of
unearthly beauty—is world-class and far flung, making
a circumnavigation a very compelling way to see more.
Iceland’s culture, one of its most surprising characteristics,
is unique. Icelandic people, including those who’ll travel with
us, are no-nonsense yet warm and welcoming, with a deep
reverence for wild places and the solace that they bring. The
Icelandic musicians who will perform for us are superb.
And now, in addition to our 11-day circumnavigation, we
offer an ‘excellent escape,’ a 6-day voyage that combines
with your choice of five optional extensions—to create a
personalized Iceland adventure, pages 18-19.
EXPEDITION HIGHLIGHTS • Explore Iceland’s pristine fjords and fascinating tundra, accompanied
by a dedicated team of naturalists • Encounter evidence of volcanic
activity as we hike over cooled lava fields and view Iceland’s newest
isle, Surtsey • Discover the rich biodiversity of the remote Westfjords,
spotting nesting puffins and gannets on the Látrabjarg cliffs and
watching for humpback and minke whales in the surrounding waters
• Choose your own adventure on one of six optional trip extensions,
from a hiking excursion across Iceland’s untamed highlands to an
exploration of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula’s epic natural wonders.

WHILE TECHNICALLY A SUB-ARCTIC GEOGRAPHY,
Iceland self-identifies as an Arctic nation, seeing
its climate fate inextricably bound to that of its
northern neighbors. The following expeditions,
aboard our new ship, National Geographic
Endurance, launching in 2020, offer an excep-
tional perspective on Iceland’s Nordic context and
communalities—from a Viking heritage, to hardy,
independent and innovative cultures. See how
they differ, too—from the presence or absence of
ice to the wildlife. Find complete day-by-day itiner-
aries and more at expeditions.com/Arctic
