Get Introduced to ICD-10-CM : How does it Stand out from ICD-9-CM in Medical CodingBy : Denise

Advancement in CodingAs we all know that the ICD-9-CM of

medical coding will soon be ICD-10-CM in 2014, we all need to be prepared to adapt this coding format.

There are many major changes that appear in this all new coding technique.

The presentation ahead will introduce the few most important differences between ICD-10-CM and ICD-9-CM.

Information well Specified Number of Codes

Unlike ICD-9-CM, the new code set is more specific and provides the right information such as right versus left in case of limbs, initial or subsequent encounter and other relevant clinical information.

ICD-9-CM has about 13,000 codes with not much room for addition of new codes. Whereas, ICD-10-CM will have roughly 68,000 codes and will be made flexible enough so that new codes can be added into it.

Length of the Codes Code Combination

ICD-10-CM will have longer cades than those present in ICD-9-CM.

Even though the length changes, it will still follow the basic structure of coding.

Unlike ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM supports further use of combination of codes that will help us to distinguish multiple diagnosis or diagnosis with a complication.

Alphabetic Codes Relevance to Modern Technology

We all know that ICD-9-CM uses only numbers for coding.

ICD-10-CM will use alphabets as part of the code to make them look more specific.

ICD-9-CM is based on outdated technology, with codes that are not able to reflect the use of new equipment.  ICD-10-CM offers more combination with modern technology, with an emphasis on devices that are actually being used for various procedures.

ConclusionICD-10-CM is not just a simple update of ICD-9-

CM. There are quite a lot of significant changes made. The high complexity of codes requires the coders to be well prepared than before. Following are the points that can be incorporated to enhance your performance with ICD-10-CM.

Provide prior training to your staff to make them familiar with the new form.

A change in the way one thinks about coding is required. One should be able to adapt to the changes in the codes as soon as possible.
