INTRODUCTION
This manual is designed to be used by the student as further learning materials in conjunction with anyclassroom presentation and supplemented by the classroom presentation handouts.
The materials in this manual is cross referenced in the classroom presentation handouts by page numbers.
This allows the student to source additional information to that which was presented in the classroom.
Alternatively, the teacher may instruct the student during any presentation to review the materials in this manualby referring the relevant page numbers.

SECTION 1 SPECIFYING AND OBTAINING NEW HARDWARE COMPONENTS
WHATOUTCOMECANYOUEXPECTFROMTHISSECTION?
In this section you will learn about meeting client requirements for new hardware components by specifying the required componentsaccording to organisational requirements, and then obtaining them from appropriate sources.
SECTIONLEARNINGOBJECTIVES
On completion of this section you will have learned:
How to identify and clarify user component requirements according to organisational guidelines
How to specify the proposed requirements
How to obtain the components in preparation for installation.
SECTIONINTRODUCTION
Computer systems need constant upgrading and maintenance. This is due to a number of reasons including rapidly changingtechnology, rapidly changing business requirements, normal wear and tear and component failure. If you have the role of performingsuch component replacement you will be expected to not only be able to correctly replace the components but also know how toclarify the need, specify the component, and obtain the component. All of this has to be done according to organisationalrequirements and within organisational guidelines. These topics will be covered in this section.

DETERMININGNEWCOMPONENTREQUIREMENTS
The typical PC is made up of the following standard components:
Once the need for a new component has been identified, for whatever reason, it needs to be correctly specified.
Motherboard Sound Card Keyboard
Processor(s) Network Card Mouse
RAM Hard Drive(s) Connectors
CMOS battery CDROM/DVD Drive(s) Camera(s)
Chassis Monitor(s) External devices
Power supp ly Speakers Scanners
Video Card Cables Printers
Fax/Modem Cards

Let us take a simple example of a replacement hard drive. This could arise from a failure of the existing drive or froma requirement for more storage space, be it for an individual user or for a group upgrade.
There are a number of questions that arise from this seemingly simple request:
Is there a Standard Operating Environment in place for the organisation? (SOE)
If so, does the request meet with the SOE standards?
Is there formal budgetary approval for the purchase?
What exactly is the need? What created the need for more storage?
Can the need be satisfied another way (e.g. networked storage)?
Are individuals permitted to make such requests?
Is the requested item the correct specification to meet the need? Will the upgrade cause other problems?
What (other than financial) approval processes need to be followed?
These questions need to be addressed to precisely determine and document the component requirements.
Let us assume that an individual has approval for a 500GB hard drive. What is the best drive to obtain? Again aseries of questions arise:
Does the organisation have a standard for this drive? Does the standard drive meet the requirement?
Does the organisation have buying agreements in place with specific vendors?
What is the organisational procurement procedure?
Are there spare drives in inventory?
Does the vendor need to be contacted for technical information?
Once these questions are answered the drive can be purchased according to the proper procedures, or obtainedfrom inventory.
Once the drive is obtained you can now prepare for installation.

SECTIONSUMMARY
In this section we looked at the standard components that make up a computer system and examined the questions that need to beasked in order to correctly specify a hardware component to meet the clients needs, and to satisfy organisational processes andprocedures.
