Crash information Systems

Integrating geographical and statistical analysis for maximum benefit.

Opening General Session

“Improve your data management”

“Your decisions based on data”

“Saving lives through data” Data driven approach

Get good results

Not wasting money

“Where is your data”

“Power of your data”

“Your data sells safety”

What Helps Integrate Data

Solid Database Technology

Flexible Software

The Data Model Flexible elements

X-element validation (crash, vehicle & person)

STATS19 (UK) compliance

MMUCC compliance

Geography In this case the

network!

Locating a crash record

There are two primary methods for locating a crash record

Lat/Long co-ordinates

Road Location

Whichever method is used the user should consider what analysis needs to be performed.

Why locate against a road network

It is the fundamental base of any transportation system

It is the real world situation

It is the way engineers think

It is the qualifier for analysis & queries

E.g. how many fatalities on Route 66It is used to integrate data

E.g. roadway characteristicsAllows improved analysis

But I don’t have a network location

Many Organizations are implementing GPS receivers to locate crash data.

So how do you locate against a road network if you only have a Lat/Long?

“The system should provide the ability to snap to the network”

Snapping to a road network

Tolerances modified when a crash lies beyond

the road network

Simple snap to nearest network point

User intervention when a crash location is

ambiguous

Spatial display of crash records

Crash records located against network

Integration with other data -Assets,Volumes, Speed zones

Co-ordinate different

Agencies!

Data display of crash records

View Crash records and other data against the network

Produce reports of the Combined data

Network Based Analysis

Area Analysis Analysis by county

Roads around schools

E.g. all 2 lane rural roadways

Route / Corridor Analysis Bus routes

Cycle routes

Etc…

Monitoring Safety Projects

Monitor effectiveness of improvementUse results for benefit-cost calculations

Analyzing Crash Sites

Reverse Engineer Successful Work

Analyze successful results & apply to mass action, area or corridor

implementationsSet system date prior to work started

Full history is always maintainedMonitor causation factors Signing / signaling

Guardrails & other relevant assets

Speed / environment

Roadway attributes / condition / construction

Generate database query based on causation factors & apply to road network
