Aims and scopeHydrology and Earth System Sciences (HESS) is aninternationalopen-access journal for thepublicationoforiginal research in hydrology, placedwithin a holisticEarth system science context. HESS encourages andsupports fundamentalandapplied research thatseeksto understand the interactions between water, earth,ecosystems,andhumans.Amulti-disciplinaryapproachisencouragedthatenablesabroadeningofthehydro-logic perspective and the advancement of hydrologicscience through the integration with other cognatesciences, and the cross-fertilization across disciplinaryboundaries.HESS,therefore,hastheambitiontoservenot only the community of hydrologists but all earth

and life scientists, water engineers and water mana-gers,whowishtopublishoriginalfindingsontheinterac-tionsbetweenhydrologicalprocessesandotherphysical,chemical, biological, and societal processes within theEarthsystem,andtheutilizationof thisholisticunder-standing towards sustainable management of waterresources,waterquality,andwater-relatednaturalhazards.The journal publishes research articles, research andtechnical notes, opinion papers, book reviews, briefcommunications, and comments on papers publishedpreviously inHESS.Paperscanaddressdifferenttech-niques and approaches, including theory, modelling,experiments,orinstrumentation.
