Humana Communitas and the Pontifical Academy forLife - Los Angeles - September 3rd, 2019

Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, President of the Pontifical Academy for Life,is in the United States from September 2nd to September 6th, 2019.The visit is part of preparations for the next Pontifical Academy for LifeAssembly on Artificial Intelligence, from 26 to 28 February, with theparticipation of Microsoft and IBM.Abp. Paglia’s first appointment was with students at Loyola MarymountUniversity(Los Angeles) on September 3 and was focused on the themeof on Global Bioethics. During this meeting Abp. Paglia outlined thetopics covered by Pope Francis in the Humana Communitas Letter,published last January to mark the 25th anniversary of the establishmentof the Pontifical Academy for Life. In this text Pope Francis referred tothe importance of addressing the unprecedented challenges posed byso called “emerging and convergent” technologies (ICTs, biotechnology,nanotechnology, robotics). Recent advances in physics, genetics andneuroscience have made profound interventions in human life possible.The human body is also susceptible to such intervention, which canchange in the way it works, as individuals and in the society as a whole(Humana Communitas, paragraph 12).At the Loyola Marymount University Abp.
