HADITH OF THE WEEK
Sahih Muslim Vol 1 - Bk. 6: Fasting (Kitab Al-Sawm)
6:2362: Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: fasting in ramadan should necessarily be commenced with the sight of the new moon and finished with the sight of the newmoon if the weather is cloudy at the beginning or at The end, then complete thirty days
The guest lecturer at the Pre-
Ramadan Lecture organised by the
Centre for Islamic Heritage and
Community Development at Al-Hikmah
University emphasised that Ramadan
demanded physical sacrifice and efforts to
gain spiritual achievements.
The Associate Prof. Adebayo
Rafiu Ibrahim from the Department of
Religion, University of Ilorin, stated this
while delivering a lecture titled, “Fasting
In The Month of Ramadan: Philosophy
and Preparation”, on
Thursday, 2nd of May,
2019, He observed that
“In the presence and
a v a i l a b i l i t y o f
delicious food, you
feel hungry, yet you
cannot eat; even in the
hottest summer, when
your throat dries up
with thirst, you will not
drink a drop of water,
even when you feel faint with thirst.”
He added that what Allah
suggested us to trial for five reasons: to
direct us, to inspect us, to protect us, to
correct and also to perfect us. And the
outcome of any trial was to increase our
consciousness of Allah, develop positive
feeling for the less-privileged people,
develop us spiritually and move us to the
next level of faith.
In his words, “preparing for
Ramadan means setting achievable goals
f o r o u r s e l v e s b e f o r e R a m a d a n
commences.” Some of these goals,
according to him were: how much would I
give out daily as alms? What quantity of
the Qur'an am I going to recite/memorise?
Will my Ramadan activities and
meritorious acts affect my obligatory
religious duties during Ramadan? Am I
going to attend Tarawih regularly or not?
How many Muslims will I invite for Iftar
(breaking of fast)? When should I repay the
Ramadan fast I missed last year? What
type of radio or television programme
would I listen to or watch during
Ramadan?
He advised that, “radio, television,
social media, internet, satellite channels,
computer games and sports, are all
distractions that Muslims need to stay
away from during this holy Month.”
Dr. Adebayo, therefore advised all
Muslims to inculcate the habit of reading
the Qur'an daily and let its meaning reflect
in their behaviour.
The Vice-Chancellor, Al-Hikmah
University, Prof. Taofeek
Ibrahim, has advised all the
University interns to utilise the
opportunity’s of the Students Industrial
Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) to
develop their intellectual skills.
P r o f . I b r a h i m , w h o w a s
represented by the Deputy Vice-
Chancellor (Academics), Dr. Lateef
Oladimeji stated this while addressing the
intern students on Thursday, 11th April,
2019, during the Industrial Work
Experience Scheme (SIWES) Orientation
Programme held at the University
Auditorium.
The Vice-Chancellor emphasised
that SIWES is compulsory for all
science-based programmes and some
programmes in the Faculties of
Education and Humanities and Social
Sciences, while it has an elective status
for other programmes partaking in it as
enshrined in the curriculum.
He advised the students to
cultivate the habit of using the SIWES
period to widen the horizon of their
intellectual capacity, moral consciousness
and sense of building a better institution
and nation as a whole.
The Director-General and Chief
Executive of the Industrial Training Fund,
Sir Joseph Ari (KSM) urged the students
to be committed, dedicated and obey the
laid-down rules and regulations of the
employers that they would be attached to.
He added that the era of seeking jobs was
becoming obsolete and students should
prepare very well for life after graduation
because Nigeria was looking for job
creators.
Sir Ari, who was represented by
the Area Manager of Industrial Training
Fund, Ilorin Area Office, Mrs. Mercy
Oguntimehin urged the students to change
their mindsets and take the programme
seriously by using it to acquire the right
skills, abilities and competencies for
building themselves and humanity at
large.
The Chief Security Officer, Al-
Hikmah University, Mr. Saliu Bello, while
delivering his speech on security at the
occasion advised the students to conduct
themselves well by preventing any act that
could damage their family and University
reputation. He added that they should be
security conscious by not boarding
unregistered vehicle or motorcycles
(okada), avoid travelling in the night,
avoid accepting lift from unknown
person(s) and whenever they wanted to
travel in a commercial vehicles, they
should always board a vehicle that was
registered with a motor park, etc.
Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every socity, in every family.
