HTML5 Coming to
A Browser Near You
How HTML5 will change the way we experience online video
By Chris Minorwww.onewordfilms.com
What is the Problem? What is online video like now?
1) Too Many Plug-ins
- There is No Standard for Online Video -
2) Flash is Inefficient
- Requires large amount of processing power:
- Not practical for mobile devices because of battery consumption
- Closed Source Code
Longer loading time
HTML 5How does it differ?
1) HTML 5 plays videos natively, No longer requiring plug-Ins to play online video.
No More Plug-ins!
2) HTML 5 does not rely on vendor-specific web tools. HTML 5 is open source.
3) New <tags> that index web content more intelligently, which allows search engines to find your information more quickly and easily.
4) Most importantly: HTML 5 will set a video standard
Designed for Mobile Devices
HTML 5 requires less energy and processing power making it practical for mobile internet
Who’s On Board?
- Google built HTML 5 into YouTube.
- Vimeo and DailyMotion quickly followed suit
- Microsoft announced support on the next version of IE
- Apple banned Flash from the iPhone, iPad Touch, and iPad
- Netflix and Hulu are planning to switch
The War Between Apple and Adobe
• Apple’s Opinion• Flash is outdated• Flash is buggy and requires too much
power• Flash is closed-source• Flash causes most crashes on the
Mac• Cross-Platform Apps will degrade the
quality of iPhone apps… “lose-the-experience of the iPhone”
• Adobe’s Opinion• Apple wants total control
- of apps- of people’s creativity- of online video
• Flash is a necessity for web video
Adobe Strikes Back
What’s the Future of Online Video?
HTML 5 Vs. Flash On The Web
26%
74%
HTML5Flash
“According to a survey conducted by video aggregator MeFeedia, 26 per cent of all web video is now available for playback with the HTML5 <video> tag and the H.264 codec. That means that 26 per cent of web video is now viewable on the iPhone/iPod/iPad.
The Problem: Browsers Aren’t Ready
- Roughly 40% of Browsers can play back HTML 5 Video
- However, Internet Explorer – The dominant browser on the web, does Not support HTML 5 video.
-Even though YouTube, Vimeo, DailyMotion, etc… support HTML 5, it does not mean they can always playback video, due to Browser restrictions.
- Since there are so many browsers, devices, and plug-ins, creating a web standard is difficult, but this is exactly what HTML 5 hopes to do.
The Tipping Point
iPhones, iPods, and iPadsaccount for the highest trafficof mobile browsing
Because they do not supportflash, popular websites, like The New York Times, and CNN have already begunadapting their site to work on these devices.
- This ultimately lead HTML 5 to become more popular than Flash -
