Presidents Message
xcitement lled the air for me at my rst CRP Convention inSacramento in March with Republican Womens Club mem-bers in huge numbers from throughout the state. It was aprivilege to meet CFRW President Mariann Hedstrom and
other familiar faces and the young Republicans eagerly attending.
Congratulations to all elected including the new Chairman of CRP,Tom Del Beccaro and Janet Kirtlink, Vice Chair for our NorthwestRegion.
A luncheon event was especially invigorating with Emmy winningauthor, Dr. Frank Luntz seen regularly on Fox News. He is recognizefor consulting Fortune 500 companies. His work in 21 countrieswriting, supervising and directing nearly two thousand surveys, focus groups, and instant response dial sessions for corporate andpublic aairs clients is well known. He oers more than seventy ne
words that work for your success in his latest book WIN. Hediscussed the top ways to communicate, keep the attention of anaudience, and was inspirational with his ideas leading us through t2012 elections and beyond, an exciting hour indeed. Frank was reacordial at his book signing and I took a photo with him and anothethe night prior with my husband Todd and John Bolton- Hoorah!
The highlight of theCRP Convention:
Dinner with former Ambassador to the United
Nations, John Bolton as the honored guest speaker.
He captivated the room with his honest and
intelligent rst-hand knowledge of current world
developments and the disturbing inconsistent
foreign policy shown by the President of the United
States. What an American man with leadership,
ideals and integrity ~ my idea of a true Republican!

George Washington never heardof the separation of church andstate. This is a prayer he gave atthe close of the Revolutionary Warin 1783. He sent copies to allthirteen colonies:
I now make it my earnest prayerthat God would have you and the
State over which you preside, inthe Holy protection that He wouldincline the hearts of the citizens tocultivate a spirit of subordinationand obedience to government, toentertain a brotherly aection andlove for one another, for theirfellow citizens of the United Statesat large, and particularly forbrethren who have served in theeld; and nally, that He wouldmost graciously be pleased todispose us all to do justice, to lovemercy, and to demean ourselveswith that charity, humility andpacic temper of mind, whichwere the characteristics of theDivine Author of our blessedreligion, and without an humbleimitation of whose example inthese things, we can never hope tobe a happy nation.

Our hearts go out to the people of Japan, after enduring a 9.1 earthqu

coming out wanting a moratorium on all nuclear power plants world
wide. Joe Lieberman wants the brakes applied. Not that he wants to stthe building of any plants - no, he just wants us to wait so we can abso

Honor Flight UpdateThe community response to Honor Flight has been so great
that we now have a local hub - North Coast Honor Flight
which will serve Humboldt, Trinity and Del Norte Counties. We
have received applications from over 50 veterans, and have
tentatively scheduled our first flight for May 14. The next flight
will be in early fall (we want to avoid the hot summer months)
and we are exploring the possibility of a charter that would
leave from the Arcata Airport. Please look for our float in the Rhododendron Parade April 30,
and mark your calendars for our big fundraiser to be held at
Blue Lake Casino on Thursday, May 26. We will also have
booths at the Humboldt County Fair and other events through-
out the summer. These will all be great opportunities to meet,
thank, and cheer our World War II veterans.
A great big thank you to all of you for your continued
support of this project. Many of you have sent contributions
which help to make this all possible. (Jerrie Bartley's German
dinner was a huge success---not only for the money raised, but I
continue to hear what a great party it was).

I have been asked to write an article about what I have beendoing since I left oce as your president. It may be a strangstory, but I think it is an important one to tell.
In 1990 I ran for public oce: County Recorder. I lost the raceand was quite disappointed, as one might expect. However,on looking back it was a good thing, since I probably wouldnot have been able to complete my term of oce. During thcampaign, I met Marge Handley, who was running for StateAssembly at the time. Two years later, Marge ran for the StatSenate and I became an early supporter. But, while campaiging for her, I began to have pain in my back and legs. Follow-ing the campaign that pain increased to the point where Icould barely make it upstairs at home, where our bedroomwas.
I began seeing a doctor and she tried a number of remediesnone of which worked. So she referred me to a specialist inArcata. It was determined that I had Spinal Stenosis, arthritigrowths inside the spinal column which were choking o thnerves and causing the pain. I was scheduled for surgery in1995. The surgery was a success; as soon as the pain from thsurgery began to subside, I felt so much better and could goon with my life.
But, a year later, the pain returned and began increasing inintensity and soon it was worse than before the surgery.During the next several years I had more pain, and more visito the doctors. Additional problems were discovered and Ihad several more operations, including the installation of an
electronic device to help manage the pain. This insert did neliminate the pain so the pain medications were continued.
With the passage of years, and the gradual increase in pain, the number and strength of the pills were increased. You caguess what was happening. Because of the drugs, I hadcompletely lost my ability to think critically and logically, anmy sort-term memory was likewise destroyed. The pills haddone a fair job of reducing pain, but had done an excellent jof killing my mind.
The miracle occurred in 2009. I got very, VERY sick in thesummer. So sick, in fact, that I could not eat and I even elimi-nated my pills. As I began to get well, I resumed my eating
AND my pills. But before those pills reintroduced the stupoto which I had become so accustomed, I began to realize thawhile I was o my pills, although I felt physically rotten, mymind was beginning to function: I could think. Althoughthrough the years every doctor I saw warned me not to stopthe pills without discussing it with them rst, I stopped takinALL my pills. However, after a few days of thinking moreclearly, I resumed my vitamins and other medications, elimi-nating only the pain pills. In other words, I got the monkey my back - COLD TURKEY.
I still have memory problems: I have diculty rememberingnames, and I leave my cane in some of the weirdest places a
spend much time looking for it and other things, but I canthink!
