The presentation shows how the Open Source is evolving in the cloud-computing environment. It analyzes the InterCloud Exchange model - an open and neutral platform for inter-cloud communication. Based on the open source model the, InterCloud Exchange is able to address the major issues related to inter-cloud communication (Flexibility, Neutrality, Interoperability, SLA management, Exchange, Trade). The presentation also suggests further research to better comprehend the effects of the cloud computing paradigm (both open or closed) on the ICT industry.

Cloud Market - Cloud Computing technologies enable a new market where computing resources are traded as “stocks”. This market needs common rules and open environment to take place (as it is for the stock exchange market…).

1. Is Cloud Computing closed or open? and what are the differences between the two models?

2. What is the role of Open Source model in the Cloud Environment?

3. Can the benefits (neutrality & openness, commons based peer production, knowledge sharing) of the Open Source model be translated in the Cloud environment?

4. How is possible to open the cloud computing infrastructure?

Research questions: when clouds are rising…

The model: centralized (closed) vs distributed (open) cloud computing

The open source model in the cloud computing environment

1. The value of ICT is moving to high-level communication (Internet in the Cloud, commoditization of software, the disappearance of the browser, the virtualization of PC).

2. A new market of computing resources (hw and sw) is rising, which is based on communication between clouds and within the cloud - but it can be closed or open.

3. Open Source (Open Innovation) can be the model to build inter-cloud communication platforms as it is able to addresses technical, economics and legal issues (Flexibility, Neutrality, Interoperability, SLA management, Exchange, Trade).

Further researches are needed to understand how the open source is evolving in the cloud system (from CODE to DATA).

The InterCloud exchange is a testing platform for its evolution.
