In Chinese we refer to the heart having doors ( ). So in theory, when you open the
door of your heart, you let things in. In English, we would probably use the term “an open
mind” instead of “an open heart” to describe a similar situation. In Chinese however, the
heart and the mind are one and the same thing, confusingly… but conveniently!
Hong Kong Sinfonietta in its 15th season as a professional orchestra is firmly in the
business of opening people’s ears, eyes, hearts and minds. We believe that a symphony
orchestra in the 21st century should be first and foremost a vehicle for opening doors –
doors which lead to great music from traditional masters, such as Beethoven, Britten
and Stravinsky, whom we feature this season, as well as artists from Hong Kong. We
hope to open doors that propel curiosity, encourage understanding and celebrate
harmony, and that through our programmes, people will realise new perspectives, make
new friends and generally enter a new level. We have more than 100 performances
again this season and we hope that you allow us to open your “heart door”
somewhere somehow as we reach out to
you, young or old, rich or poor, musical or
not, transcending all barriers of society.
A world with open doors is a world which is
filled with trust, harmony and well-being.
We aspire to be an orchestra which builds
Hong Kong.

Having firmly established itself as the orchestra which speaks its passion, has a vision and walks its mission, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta enters its 15th professional season, offering regular performances at its partnervenue – City Hall Concert Hall, providing accompaniment for local and visiting opera and ballet troupes, andreaching out to as many people as possible in both form and content.
Hong Kong Sinfonietta and its trade-mark concerts for audience development will continue with its MusicDirector Yip Wing-sie and other creative artists. Our illustrative concerts are tailor-made for different kinds ofaudience – we reach out to parents at the babies concerts (age 0-2), to the numerous children learningmusical instruments, to the executives in Central who want to take a break at lunch time, or those whowant to share our new endeavours at ArtisTree.
Hong Kong Sinfonietta also takes the mission of placing local musicians on centre-stage very seriously. Apartfrom the make-up of the orchestra, which is mainly local, our Music Director Yip Wing-sie is also from HongKong. In addition, we are also proud to be featuring cellist Wendy Law (Artist Associate) and Jason Lai(Associate Conductor). On the commissioning front, we look forward to new works by three local composers.
We are poised to share 120 and more performances with you this season, everywhere in Hong Kong, andsome in Japan. We hope that you will be able to enjoy some of them with us.

First launched in 2006, the Artist Associate Scheme aims to provide a platform forintensive collaboration with an individual artist or group from different artsdisciplines during the course of the season, when new ideas and initiatives areexplored to expand beyond the horizon of classical music.
We are proud that these artists have since continued to becomepillar figures in their respective fields. We continue to workwith them in different projects and together, we arebuilding a cultural tomorrow.
