Superior Officer Mark Figueroa and Chief Frank Alanis.
Superior Police Department continues to add to its ranks, bringing on more experience to serve the community. Recently the department hired a new police officer who will be working as a reserve. “Police reserve officers are uniformed sworn law enforcement officers who volunteer their time to the police department,” Superior Police Chief Frank Alanis said. “They perform a variety of functions for the department such as patrolling, responding to calls for service, investigating crimes, bike patrol and a variety of other tasks.” SPD’s new hire is Mark Figueroa who just retired from the Phoenix Police Department after 20 years of honorable service. “We are very fortunate to have him,” Alanis said. “He starts his field training in December.” Officer Figueroa is a 20-year law enforcement veteran, recently retired from the Phoenix Police Department. He proudly served in the patrol division, working daily out on the streets to foster positive community relations and serve the people of Phoenix Metro area. Officer Figueroa is an Arizona native. He graduated from the Phoenix Police Academy in December of 1998. During his career he has had the privilege of policing some of the most diverse communities in the Phoenix Metro area including the city’s Cactus Park, South Mountain, Central City and Mountain View precincts. He served as a Field Training Officer and was one of the first officers to work in and help establish protocols for the department’s Central Booking Detail, a unit that intakes and processes all prisoners for the city of Phoenix. He has also served as the Phoenix police Department’s Santa for various community outreach efforts. Officer Figueroa has been the recipient of numerous department commendations and awards, including the Medal of Merit, Medal of Life Saving and the 2002 American Legion Police Officer of the Year award. He has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to community based policing and has remained steadfast in his commitment to problem solving and partnership building with the citizens he has been honored to serve. A devoted husband of 26+ years and father to three wonderful children, Officer Figueroa’s proudest moments are when he and his wife are cheering for their two teenage boys as they play baseball or for their “tween age” daughter as she dances with her competitive team. Officer Figueroa is extremely excited and grateful for the opportunity to begin this new chapter in his life with the Superior Police Department. He looks forward to serving and fostering new professional and community-oriented relationships. Chief Alanis will be introducing Officer Figueroa to the Superior Town Council and the community at the next Superior Town Council meeting. If you see him out and about in Superior, be sure to say hello.

Gila County and the Town of Superior have used Brownfields funding to demolish problem properties and in the case of the Belmont Hotel the funding was used to complete environmental remediations. In addition to applying for the grant, the Town of Superior took the lead on working with the League of Arizona Cities and Towns to develop statewide policy and legislation to allow cities and towns to create a vacant building registry ordinance. In August, the Town presented a resolution to the members of the League to allow for the League to develop the legislation. The long term goal is to eventually close the loop holes in tax law that incentives blight.
