Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us there is a season for everything under heaven. Well,
in the Powell household this is certainly true….however, these seasons often
revolve around sports! We just wrapped up basketball season. Ethan played
8th grade basketball, and had a successful season. Sara was a starter on the
varsity basketball team that became the bi-district and area champions. And,
now we are on to tennis. Ethan played in a champ/superchamp USTA tour-
nament and won consolation. Sara will compete at the regional team tennis
tournament on March 6th and 7th. Oh, in addition to sports, Sara has also
been working on One Act Play in hopes of defending their state champion-
ship title from last year.
What about seasons of the church year? Well, we are a few weeks into the
season of Lent. Lent is the season of reflection and repentance leading up to
Easter. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to say that we “celebrate” Lent; I
guess saying we “observe” Lent is more accurate. At a time when our Chris-
tian holidays tend to get co-opted by commercialization (Christmas &
Easter) no one has really found a way to capitalize on commercializing Lent,
unless you count all-you-can-eat fish Fridays at some restaurants. So, with
Lent, we can’t hide behind Santa or the Easter Bunny; we are simply ex-
posed in our relationship with Christ. We journey with Him to the cross and
ask for forgiveness for our sins, which are surely forgiven. We are given
this time of opportunity and reflection as a preparation for going out into the
world to proclaim the Good News of our Lord, just as Jesus was led into the
wilderness for 40 days before his ministry began.
May you draw near to Christ in this season of Lent as Christ draws near to
you.
God bless you,
Pastor Wade

WEST TEXAS UMW DISTRICT MEETING The Hilda UMW & Martha Circle hosted the annual spring meeting of the West Texas District on Saturday, February 21st. Forty-two women from Art, Castell, Bronte, San An-gelo, Brady, Mason, and several other towns attended as well as Pastor Wade, who made 43 attending. As you can see from the photos on the previous page, we had a day full of fun, food, and fellowship! Thanks to Rebecca Dodson who played the piano and to Linda Scott who played the accordion!
We had four large baskets filled with hygiene items that the guests brought for the Ma-son School Nurses. The offering was taken to donate to Bluebonnet CASA. A business meeting was held following a delicious lunch of chicken spaghetti, mixed green salad, fruit salad, and broccoli cornbread with lots of incredible desserts! We also had door prizes that were donated by Linda Kesler so twelve ladies won some really nice prizes. A big THANKS to Linda for the door prizes and the beautiful decorations! We’re wishing her a quick and complete recovery after her surgery!

FEBRUARY YOUTH LOCK-IN The Mason County Ministerial Alliance held their annual lock-in on the first Saturday in Febru-
ary. Students from Mason County had the opportunity to play games and fellowship and hear testi-
mony from guest speakers as well as a Christian band. The event was open to all students in Jr High
and High School. The featured speaker was Sarah Hill who came all the way from Hawaii to speak
to our youth. Sarah was featured in the blockbuster movie, Soul Surfer. It is the story of professional
surfer Bethany Hamilton who lost her arm in a shark attack. Sarah was Bethany's youth pastor, and
she was portrayed in the film by singer/actress Carrie Underwood.
