Transcript of Hershey - Estimating Fractional Amounts

HERSHEY’S IS MY GAME!!

CHOCOLATE OBJECTIVES

• We will estimate to find fractional amounts of a Hershey’s bar.

• We will find a fraction of a set of Hershey’s bar pieces.

• We will find fractions that are equal using Hershey’s bar pieces.

• We will find the cost of each fraction of the Hershey’s bar.

K-W-L• K• I know that there are 12/12 in a Hershey’s bar.• I know that half of the box is cut up.• I know that Seth has the most.• I know the fraction is 6/6.• I know Alexis has four pieces of candy.• I know that there are 12 pieces.• I know that Seth has half of the Hershey’s bar.• I know half of the Hershey’s bar is missing.• I know the square is a fraction.

K-W-L• W

• I want to know why some names have larger parts than the other ones.

• I want to know what it is all about.• I want to know how much pieces there

are going to be.• I want to know if we are going to divide

the pieces up.• I want to know if we are going to eat it

when we are done.

K-W-L• “W” Continued…

• I want to know if they will have the same amount if Seth shares with Bethany.

• I want to know what the squares represent.• I want to know how Seth can share his

whole.• I want to know what are the seven pieces.• I want to know if the right side is the same

as the other.• I want to know why there aren’t seven

different names.

We’ll handle this Hershey’s lesson in small bites!!

Quit around.

I can handle the WHOLE lesson!

ting

Yes!! Hershey’s Is My Game.

Seth, Alexis, and Bethany shared a plain Hershey’s bar. The picture below shows the fraction of the Hershey’s bar each student ate.

Seth

Alexis Alexis

Alexis Alexis

Bethany Bethany

Seth ate 6/12(1/2) of the Hershey’s bar. Seth paid $6 for the share he ate.

Write a fraction that tells how much of the WHOLE Hershey’s bar Seth ate.

a.

6/12

Six - twelfths

b. Write a fraction to tell how much of the WHOLE Hershey’s bar Alexis ate?

Four - twelfths

4/12

Alexis ate 4/12(1/3) of the Hershey’s bar.

Alexis paid $4 for the share she ate.

c. What fraction of the WHOLE Hershey’s bar did Bethany eat?

Two -twelfths2/12

Bethany ate 2/12(1/6) of the Hershey’s bar.

Bethany paid $2 for the share she ate.

Are we done yet?

There’s

No way!

to do!much

K-W-L

• L• Hershey’s bar (twelfths)

• A WHOLE Hershey’s bar has twelve fractional parts.

• 12/12 = 1 12/12 = $12

• 6/12 = 1/2 1/2 of $12 = $6

• 4/12 = 1/3 1/3 of $12 = $4

• 2/12 = 1/6 1/6 of $12 = $2

There it is!

I hope you enjoyed our lesson.

You did a great job!

We really!!

Score Description 4 8 - 9 points 3 6 - 7 points 2 4 - 5 points 1 1 – 3 points

OR Response shows minimal understanding of estimating fractional amounts, finding a fraction of a set, and identifying equivalent fractions.

0 0 points (Response is incorrect or contains some correct work that is irrelevant to the skill or concept being measured.)

Score: 4 = A 3 = B 2 = C 1 = D 0 = U

Scoring Information Part a: 1 points correct answer (1/2) Part b: 2 points correct fraction (4/12 or equivalent 1/3) with explanations or pictures adequate to show understanding Part c: 2 points correct fraction (2/12 or equivalent 1/6) with explanations or pictures adequate to show understanding OR 1 point each (b/c) correct fraction with inadequate or missing explanation or picture OR pictorial representation of correct fraction Part d: 4 points 1 point each correct answer (Seth: $6, Alexis: $4, Bethany: $2, or each answer correct relative to answer given to Parts a, b, and/or c ) AND 1 point explanation or work showing correct strategy Notes: Do not give 1 point for answer if student indicates that all people earned the same

amount (e.g., saying that Alexis gets $4 if reasoning is 3 x 4 = 12; Seth, Alexis, and Bethany all get $12).

If amounts are not labeled with people’s names, assess amounts in the following order: Seth, Alexis, Bethany. If student only provides 1 amount and it is not labeled with a name or work to indicate the person receives that amount, do not award credit.
