the Herne Bay Festival Advisory

help develop the estival, and

o time and energy to ensure

This years estival sees the return o the ever popular Herne
Bay Rocks competition, a showcase held all over town or the
duration o the estival, searching or the best local musical
talent. Although called Rocks, any live music is welcome and in
the past we have had everything rom jazz, soul, ska, acoustic,acapella and rap as well as rock to name just a ew styles.
Previous winners have included Amber Room, eaturing Matt
Clubb and Sueleen Fletcher rom BBC The Voice and who will
be appearing on our main stage on Saturday 25 (see page 40).
There are two days in a recording studio and a slot on the
estivals main stage up or grabs or the winner. So come alongto any o the listed venues and enjoy some brilliant live music

Herne Bays Got Talent!Sunday 26 August Central Bandstand 3pm
Do you have the voice of an angel? Can you dance like J-Lo? Orare you the next Michael McIntyre? Whatever your talent, if it is
entertaining, we want to see it! Come and enter yourself at our
annual competition to find the best talent in Herne Bay. With a whole
afternoon of singing, dancing, comedy, magic and music its the
one event you wont want to miss. Register at the Central Bandstand
from 1pm to 2.30pm. Please read the rules below before entering.
Saturday 18 AugustCentral Parade 8pmAre you a swash buckler,
a grog-swiller, or a captain of
the seas? Then put on your eye-patch
and join in this merry band of pirates
as they make their way along Central Paradefrom Lane End to the Clocktower Plaza.
The pirate parade needs everyone to be
involved, and there are two ways to enter.
Either book on one of our workshops that are
running on Thursday 16, Friday 17 or Saturday
18 August and be involved with creating the
costumes that make up the parade. Or if you
cant make the workshops, register
online (this is really important!) and then
turn up on the night dressed to look the part!
You can be as creative as you like with your
costume perhaps add a captains hat, a
beard, or a stripey top.
As this is an evening parade well be handing
out glow sticks for you to carry, but why not
bring a torch as well and make sure you
really shine? All children in the parade must be
accompanied by at least one adult make sure they get dressed up too!

Herne Bay Histories
For the Herne Bay Festival, BeachCreative will be building on a
project looking at the towns
residents and visitors views on
their experiences o being in
Herne Bay.
As part o this, the publicare invited to come to Beach
House to tell their stories and
be flmed. There will be a series
o creative workshops to give
participants ideas about how
they might produce creative
work, which tells their stories,and the outcomes produced
will orm part o an exhibition in
Beach House to be launched on
Saturday 25 August.
Beach House
Beach Creative is a non-proft community interest organisation that aims to support and enable the
development o creative industries in the Herne Bay district. Part o this will be to increase opportunities
or the community to develop their creative skills and participate in the arts, locally, nationally and,
internationally. The University or the Creative Arts initiated the project and supports many o the
activities within the space and the Creative Canterbury team at Canterbury City Council oered Beach
House on a short-term lease as a temporary venue through the Creative Development team.

MIMS

MIMS is a collective term for the
concerts that are held throughout
the year at The United Church
in Mortimer Street. The term is
used to try to encompass thelarge range and variety of content
from swing band to classical
trios, cathedral organists to choral
groups, piano recitals to brass
bands and offering all musical
styles from Bach to Bacharach.
As part of the festival week there
will be a number of additional
concerts on offer and we are
very excited to see them feature in
the programme. On Saturday 18
August, David Ruddock
gives a piano recital and onThursday 23 August, the Director
of Music at Liverpool Cathedral,
David Poulter, gives an organ
recital.
In addition to this there will be
FREE one-hour lunch time organconcerts taking place every day,
from Monday 20 to Saturday 25,
starting at 12.30pm. There are
refreshments available in the
church from 12pm to 2pm and
people are welcome to enter or
leave recitals at any time.

Monster Crab Catching
CompetitionOne o the estivals avourite

rom the pier and try to catch the
heaviest crab, or angle or one o
the specially marked crabs that
have been placed in the water!
There are prizes to be won or
both categories. Please bring
16 metres o fshing line, a smallweight and a container or bucket
to keep your crab in. Fish heads
and squid are oered as bait at
the start. All crabs get to go back
in the water ater the weigh-in.

St Georges Cup and
Festival Race - a Pursuit Sailing Race.
In a pursuit race the slowest boat starts first and the faster boats start
at various times after this according to their handicap. The handicapsystem is called a Portsmouth Yardstick and is designed so that boats
of different speeds can race against each other. At the end of the race
the boat that is in the leading position having sailed the same number
of laps as everyone else is the winner. Spectators will get an excellent
view of the event from the pier and a commentator will be on hand
to explain what is going on and who is in the lead. This trophy was
originally presented to the West Cliff Regatta Committee by the Hotel
St. George as a sailing trophy in 1964. The race this year is between the
two local clubs: Hampton Pier Yacht Club and Herne Bay Sailing Club.

dedicated group of 45 members
that are based in Herne Bay, and
have been performing regularlysince 1992. The band members
range from students to teachers,

director, Paul Valentine. In thepursuit of providing something

The reopened Herne Bay Pier will
be a popular venue or the visitors
coming to enjoy the estival. The
pier has always been a traditional
part o the towns seaside un and
celebration and this year will be no
exception. The Pier Trust is planning
to bring back Herne Bays much
loved roller-skating activity to the
pier this summer, various ood andshopping opportunities, a ca and
sun deck to soak in the sun, the sea
air and a range o entertainment.
With the support o Canterbury
Council, the Pier Trust is raising
unds through sponsorship anda series o events on the pier this
summer in order to bring the pier
platorm to lie again with traditional
seaside eatures such as a retail
beach huts, a stage, ags, lights,
planters and lots o seats.
