Heat and Temperature

2

Thermal Energy• Thermal energy a form of kinetic energy characterized by randomness of motion at the atomic and molecular levels.

3

Internal Energy• Internal energy is the grand total of all the particles that make an object.

4

Heat•Heat is energy in transfer between a system and its surroundings caused by temperature differences.

5

Heat•The transfer can occur in different ways.

8

Conduction• Conduction occurs when two things at different temperatures touch each other and energy directly transfers from the material in the hotter object to the material in the colder object at the point of contact.

9

Conduction• During conduction, heat is transferred through the vibration of molecules in a substance.  As something gets warmer, it begins to increase the vibration and movement of the molecules that it consists of.

10

Conduction•Heat transfer through solids.

Why are most cooking pots and pans made up of metals?

Let’s check your knowledge!

13

Why are most pan and pot handles made up of plastic or wood?

Let’s check your knowledge!

14

Convection•Transfer of heat by mass motion of a fluid such as air or water when the heated fluid is caused to move away from the source of heat, carrying energy with it.

15

Convection Current

•Warm fluid rises, cold fluid sinks.

When there is a fire, why must you crawl on the ground?

19

Radiation•The transfer of heat by EM waves such as visible light, infrared and ultraviolet radiation.

20

Radiation•This heat transfer will occur even if there were nothing but vacuum between you and the source of heat.
