“Health 2.0” (ill-)defined

• beyond traditional “health IT” (not just EMRs/PHRs)

• health care + delivery + services + prevention + wellness

• everything is data + data is everything

- new sources (e.g. Humedica’s aggregated eHealth data)

- open-source (e.g. Merck’s cancer database)

• “democratization” (i.e. decentralization) of health

- MD no longer “king”

- self-care , self-monitoring, social / family involvement

• characterized by fragmentation + froth… so far

Our focus today…

Mobile + Health =

…?

4.1 billionmobile phone users today

Why?

WHO definition:

“delivery of health services + information via mobile technologies enabling more decentralization + greater accessibility”

-- mHealth summit, Washington DC, 2011

A few telling (?) trends

• penetration – 81% of US MDs will own + use a smartphone by 2012; 78% of general mobile users have looked online for health info*

• personal monitoring devices – cheap + everywhere (e.g. FitBit) although still a part of the “quantified self” community

• emerging market oppt’y – significant potential abroad; numbers + limited regulation (e.g. Gates @ mHealth summit)

• reimbursement – successful pilots are plenty, but limited commercial success to date (e.g. CMS + CardioNet)

• analytics – population comparisons, real-time response, etc.; with all this data, comes great responsibility

• 2009 Pew Internet research report (Susannah Fox)
