President’s Message HelloBranchMembers.Ihopeyouarealldoingwell,stayingsafeathome,andfindingwaystoconnecttofriendsandfamily.AsIwaspreparingtowritethismessage,IcameacrosstheAAUWCABoardtoBoardnewsletter.IdecidedtocopythisintroductionintomymessagebecauseitencompassesallthatIfeel:“Weallknowthereiscurrentlyanewnormal.However,wecanstillenjoysomeofouroldnormal.Thefollowingremindsusoftheimportantthingswecanenjoy.Goingoutdoorsisnotcanceled(butpracticesocialdistancing),listeningtomusicisnotcanceled,qualitytimewithourfamiliesisnotcanceled,readingabookisnotcanceled,sharingwithfriendsisnotcanceled,singingoutloudisnotcanceled,laughingisnotcanceled.SharingHopewithothershasnotbeencanceled.Embracewhatwehave.”Keepsafe,staydiligentandkeepotherssafeaswell.I’dadddancingisnotcancelled.Thankyou.PATIENCEISAVIRTUE–AmessagefromAAUWCAco-PresidentsCathyFoxhovenandJaneNeimeierDuringthesestrangeandtryingtimes,itisgoodtohavealotofpatience.WewerealllookingforwardtoawonderfulconventioninApril,butastheCOVID-19virusspread,theco-Presidentsstartedgettingmessagesfrommemberstellingustocancel.Well,weknewthatifwecanceledtooearly,wewouldlose$45,000totheWestinHotel.So,wewaitedpatientlyuntilthegovernordeclaredthattherecouldbenomeetingslargerthan50(whichlaterbecamenomeetingsperiod),andthenwecanceled.Consequently,wegotallofourmoneyback.TheyalsofoundoutthatourCEO,KimChurches,wasabletocanceltheNationalConferenceforCollegiateWomenStudentLeaders(NCCWSL)scheduledforJune2020withnopenaltyforourorganizationbyskillfullynegotiatingwiththeuniversitywhereNCCWSLwastobeheld.Inaddition,afterconferringwithTechTrekLeadersfromalloverthecountry,KimChurchesaskedthatallTechTrekcampsbecanceledfor2020.Shementionedthatevenifthe“StayatHome”orderisliftedbyJunepeoplewillstillhavetopracticesocialdistancing.Asco-Presidentsweareconcernednotonlywiththehealthandsafetyofourcampers,butwealsowanttoprotectourcampvolunteersandteachers,manyofwhomareinthehigh-riskcategory.Wearehopingthattheuniversitieswillrolloveranypaymentsthatwehavemadeto2021.Staytunedformoreinformation.

Hat’s Off to Hayward TheHaywardCityCouncilvotedTuesday,April7th,toexpandCOVID-19evictionprotectiontobusinessandothertenantsofcommercialbuildings,aswellastohomeownersunabletomakemortgagepaymentsduetothepublichealthcrisis.

TheCouncilactionputsinplaceanew90-daymoratoriumonevictionsofresidentialandcommercialtenantsforfailuretopayrentduetocoronavirusaswellasonno-faultevictionsthatwouldotherwisebeallowableunderthecity’sresidentialrentstabilizationordinance.Similarly,mortgagelenderswouldnotbeabletoevicthomeownersfollowingaforeclosurebasedonfailuretopayduetopandemic-relatedhardshipoverthesame90-dayperiod.Toavoidforeclosure,ahomeownershouldcontacttheirloanservicerimmediatelytodiscussoptions.ThevotefollowedaCaliforniaJudicialCouncilorderonMondayhaltingallevictionandforeclosureproceedingswithinCaliforniacourtsystems,exceptthosedeterminedbythecourttobenecessarytoprotectpublichealthandsafety.Trialsthathavebeensetwillbepostponedfor60daysandnewtrialswillnotbescheduledwithin60daysoftherequestunlessnecessarytoprotectpublichealthandsafety.Thesemodificationswillbeinplaceuntil90daysaftertheliftingofCalifornia’sCOVID-19StateofEmergencyThenewHaywardevictionmoratoriumdoesnotrelieveresidentialandcommercialtenantsfromresponsibilitytopayrent—butprovidesatemporarysafeharboragainstevictionandaccesstoCity-fundedmediationservicestohelpworkoutrepaymentplanswithlandlords.InadoptingCOVID-19evictionmoratoriums,theCouncilalsohasdirectedCitystafftodevelopafinancialassistanceprogramtolessentheimpactofunpaidrentsonresidentialtenantsandlandlords,whichwillbeofferedtolow-incomeHaywardresidentsinthecomingweeks.Specifically,themoratoriumcoversinstancesinwhichinabilitytopayrentarisesfromasubstantialdecreaseinincomerelatedtothepandemic,includingduetolayoffs,reductionsinworkhours,includingasaresultofhavingtoremainhomewithchildrenwhoareoutofschool,declinesinbusinessearningsandoutofpocketmedicalexpensesassociatedwithcoronavirusorCOVID-19disease.Toqualifyforthemoratoriumevictionprotection,tenantsshouldnotifytheirlandlordimmediatelyabouttheirinabilitytopayrentandplantobeabletodocumentthatthelossofincomeisrelatedtotheCOVID-19pandemic.Duringthemoratorium,landlordscannotchargelatefeesifthenon-paymentisrelatedtoCOVID19.Tenantsremainliableforunpaidrent;however,landlordscannotfileforanevictionforrentnotpaidduringthemoratoriumuntil90daysafteritsexpiration.Formoreinformationaboutthemoratoriumormediationservices,visitittheCity’swebsiteatwww.hayward-ca.gov/housingorcall(510)583-4454or(510)909-4588.

WHYDOWESTILLRECOGNIZEEQUALPAYDAY?Withthestateinvirtuallockdown,mostCAbrancheshadtocanceltheirplannedcommunityEqualPayDayAwarenesseventsonMarch31,2020.Thisdateischoseneachyearbasedoncensusdatatosymbolizehowfarintotheyearwomenmustworktoearnwhatmenearnedinthepreviousyear.EqualPayDaywasoriginatedbytheNationalCommitteeonPayEquity(NCPE)in1996asapublicawarenesseventtoillustratethegapbetweenmen'sandwomen'swages.Becausewomenearnless,onaverage,thanmen,theymustworklongerforthesameamountofpay.Thewagegapisevengreaterformostwomenofcolor.Lastyear’sdatewasApril2,sotherehasbeenatwo-dayimprovement.
