Hardness scale designation

Le. HB10/3000 denotes Brinell Hardness using a 10mm ball and 3000kgf loadWhen testing at HB5/750 note indentation diameter and read off HB value in column tothe left.

When testing at HB10/500, HB10/1000 or HB10/3000 note indentation diameter andread off HB value in the appropriate column.

It is important that the correct f/D2ratio (where f is the load in kgf and D is thediameter of the ball indenter) is used for any particular test.Ferrous metals

Examples of Load and Ball diameter ratios:

f/D2 =30 . HB10/3000, HB5/750,. f/D2 =10 .HB10/1000,

The materialbeing tested must be at least 8 times as thick as the depth of the Brinellindentationwhen calculatedfrom the formula

In order to achieve the most accurate results it is necessary to have as large as possiblean indentation compatible with the material thickness and the engineering requirementsof the component surface.

All hardness testing machines should be regularly checked using certified Test Blocks,and all Brinell Microscopes should be regularly checked using a certified stageMicrometer.
