Objectives

a. Define Hazard and Riskb. Identify the types/kinds of

environmemtal hazardsc. Discuss Risk Assessment and Risk

Managementd. Suggest ways to prevent

Environmental Hazards in the Philippines

Outline

a. Hazardb. Types of Environmental

Hazardsc. Risk Assessmentd. Risk Management

Hazard

A situation that poses a level of threat to life, health ,property, and environment. (Nebel & Wright,1993)

Most hazards are dormant, armed, active. (Wikipedia 2010)

Risk= hazard x vulnerability (– )capacity The likelihood or probability of an adverse

outcome or event. (http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/wld/documents/era.pdf)

Chemical Hazards

Harmful chemicals in the air water, food ,or soil‘ Toxic’: causes temporary or permanent harm or

death‘ Hazardous’: causes harm because it is

flammable,explosive, or irritates skin,lungs,causes allergies.

Mutagens: causes a mutation in DNA ; increases change for mistakes in the DNA to occur

Teratogens: harms, causes birth defects in fetus or embryo

Carcinogens- promotes cancer (www.greenet.com)

Biological Hazards

Pathogens, bacteria, viruses, parasites, etc.Non-transmissible disease: does not spread from

person to person .Ex. Ashma, cardiovascular problems, and malnutrition

Transmissible disease: also known as “infectious” a disease that can spread from person to person

Physical Hazards

Fire, earthquakes, tsunami, volcanic eruptions, floods, typhoons, etc.

Physical Hazards

GEOHAZARDS

• are geological phenomena that pose danger to people’s lives, properties, infrastructure and communities. These include landslides, flooding and land subsidence. However, in some cases, geohazards can also be induced by human activities.

• Geohazards cannot be totally prevented but their impact on people and the environment

may be lessened or mitigated. (www.denr.gov.ph)

GEOHAZARD MAPPING AND ASSESSMENT

Causes of Hazards

• Natural Hazards• Man-made Hazards• Deadly force or retribution

Risk Assessment

Scientific process of estimating the harm or danger a particular hazard can have on human health or environment

Identify it!Probability?

Consequence?

Development of Plans

• How to assess unknown hazards

• What do you already know about these drums?

Possible Scenarios

• As an emergency responder, unique exposures are possible

Risk Management

Making decisions to reduce the risk of a potential hazard.

Analyze: Is it worth it?

How much reduction?

Flammable Hazards

• Watch for Flammable Hazards

Let’s ponder on this…
