Hand Art & the “Handscape”

Your Task Today:

• Finish one detailed drawing of your hand • You may choose one of three poses: a fist, an

open hand (front or back), or your hand holding an object1. Start with the contour (outline) using light

marks2. Next, begin shading dark spots and mid tones3. Finally, add details like nails, wrinkles, and hair

The “Handscape”

Now that you’ve gotten some practice drawing the hand, we’re going to take the idea of the hand drawing one step further: incorporating the hand into a landscape.

This step will require your imagination, but will allow you a lot of freedom for creativity in your drawing.

Take a look at the following examples of “handscapes”:

The Assignment:

• Create an original composition using the hand as your inspiration.

• Start with a 10-15 minute sketch. If you’re at a loss for ideas, just start doodling. Your sketch doesn’t have to be perfect or even the same as what you end up drawing. It is meant to give you ideas.

• Your “handscape” should include at least one hand, have color, and be original (no copying from an image/logo/etc.!)

• No hand gestures (you know what I’m talking about!)
