Craig Geyer Farm Corn Husking History

Com husking is the oldest method ofharvesting corn. Before the 1920's,farmers would husk corn by hand. Therewere no machines invented for thefarmers to use. Instead, they went intothe fields with horses Cllndwagons tohusk corn from the stalk. The cornwould be stored in barns to f~ed cows,pigs, horses, sheep and goats for thenext season. Extra corn not needed forthe winter months would be sold forfamily income.

From US 30, travel north 7.5 miles on US31 to (Exit 233) to US 6. then go west 1mile to stoplight, turn right, continuenorth on Michigan to 2nd yellow flasherat LaVille High School. Turn right (east)and go 1.1 miles to the "T". Turn leftand continue 1 mile to Craig Geyer FarmfollOWing signs. Free parking.

Large farms often hired migrant workersfor the harvest season. Workers wouldstart in Florida picking fruit then move toGeorgia for the peach harvest al1d con-tinue to the Midwestern Com Belt forthe com harvest.

Your judge will tell you when to beginhusking. Pull ears of com off each stalkand continue down the row until yourjudge says to stop. Make sure to removeas much husk from each ear as possible.Husk weight will count against your totalscore. Also, be sure to collect everymarketable ear of corn as you continuedown the row. Any ears left behind willbe collected by a gleaner and will bededucted from your total score.

. Smallef.,crops would be farmed byfamilies. Relatives. neighbors, andfriends would gather to help each otherbring in the crops for the season.Beginning at daylight and working untilsundown each day, everyone in thefamily helped with the harvest.
