GUYANA’S
BLESSINGS
20 POEMS By Dmitri Allicock
MALACCA FLOWERS
Land of Malacca fragrance & charm
Soft grass and pink kisses so warm
Alluring showers of petals beckons
Quiet Demerara river shore deafens
Strong like sweet roses on the breeze
Big juicy fruits soon to be on the tree
Lingering aroma never to pass you by
Lures, like honey to a bee or butterfly
Land of pink swirling round & round
Beautiful blessings covering the ground
THE POND FLY’S WAY [Palmfly-Dragonfly]
I remember a lovely hallow ground
Where childhood dreams are found
A land of fresh waters & leafy green
Sunshine breath and rain in-between
A pond- fly, perched on a reed stem
And a boisterous Kiskadee back then
The soothing calm, near the riverside
The realm of an enchanted peace bide
Watching a pond- fly gracious beauty
Shimmering wings of purpose & duty
Dancing and bobbing with the breeze
Obedient and accepting life & the trees
A pond- fly knowing the brevity of life
Kiskadee leers, yet lives without strife
Moving with freedom in gracious flight
Teaching life’s rhythm & modest delight
Living the minutes to the fullest, each day
Pond- fly glitters & the playground’s way
BLACK NUN- BIRD- GUYANA
Little holy black bird
So quiet, hardly heard
Adorable & like a nun
Perched in morning sun
Nature made more divine
Nun- bird of Guyana enshrine
WALK SOFTLY
Listen very carefully and you will hear
Echoes of patience and peace on the air
Walk softly amid the river we call life
Chart a course of kindness and no strife
Listen to the whispers along your road
Hear the calls where the water slowed
Leave a worthy touch to cherish & stay
Footprints to follow that leads the way
Live life where dignity & love is supreme
Courage, beauty and wisdom is the scene
Step into that realm where the jacana play
Emerald lilies floating in harmonious sway.
SECRET GETAWAY
A little honeymoon cottage by the sea
A secret getaway where I’d want to be
So peaceful and lacks any commotion
Just beyond the trees is the calm ocean
Renewal of martial vows a faithful sight
Humble little house in the morning light
DEAR COCONUT MAN
Pomeroon sun tempers by Atlantic breeze
A dear coconut man, I will take one please
A taste of Guyana especially when it’s hot
Expertly, the coconut man trims off the top
Precious Essequibo vendor in Guyana’s heat
All natural & safe quenching water so sweet
Gulping will be irresistible, but I’ll try to sip
Then for delicious jelly with a chop & a split
Friendly coconut man & humble Guyana’s son
Thank you so much and I will take another one.
A TASTE OF HOME
A handful of lovely bora, take one look
Just picked from my garden, I will cook
Tomatoes & okras are coming along fine
I will sauté with butter, garlic and thyme
Stewed in a pan with any choice of meat
And served over shine rice & great to eat
SOURSOP MILKSHAKE
Make no mistake
A soursop milkshake
And one of Guyana’s best taste
Savor the flavor, without haste
Such a smooth, silky & milky pulp
To enjoy slowly and not in one gulp
PRECIOUS WATER
Only 1 % of the world’s water is free
But, how does it come to you and me?
97 percent is salt water, so let me think
So many without and dying for a drink
The other 2 percent, stored at the poles
Essence of our life and taste better cold
For many in the world, water is not near
Bountiful in Guyana and should not fear
Yet must be purified or you’ll have none
And delivered by a pipe in the blazing sun
BOYHOOD DAYS
Come inside and wash your face!
Dirty hands and feet, make haste!
It’s time to do homework, I said
Before supper & straight to bed
Stop that playing & running about
It’s time to turn on the waterspout
Rub and soap those fingers too
Mother calling and a time I knew
BUTTERFLY WISHES
[Goshen- Essequibo]
May the wings of a butterfly touches your finger
Bring color to your heart where peace lingers
Enhance happiness, laughter and your sunshine
With riches of simplicity that is divine
BORA STEW TODAY
My garden fresh bora stew
I’m making for me and you
Chop the bora into little bits
Discard the tough ends or tips
Onion, peppers, garlic, thyme
Season well & make it rhyme
Add tomatoes and beef in a pot
Cook well until done and hot
Add bora, simmering in steam
Very delicious bora stew dream
Serve over potatoes or shine rice
Bora stew of Guyana and so nice
FLOWERS OF GUYANA
A bouquet of flowers, I will get
Picked from my garden you bet
Bright and beautiful in the sun
To give to you, my special one
A little love of Guyana to show
Fragrance of happiness to know
MY ORCHIDS
Faithful orchid fragrance bloom
Permeates air in overcast gloom
Raindrops glistens on the leaves
Songbirds sings in my coconut trees
After the rain has kissed the earth
Teardrops of Mother Nature rebirth
NEARBY & AROUND THE CORNER
I was born on the bank of a river
Where heart meanders forever
My blood flows in its stream
Warm memories lives in my dream
Today as I look at this nearby waterway
Reflecting life & nature made my day
TREMBLING TRACKS- LINDEN
The days of trembling tracks
Of Upper Demerara, way back
Whistle and thunder that excite
Laden cars coming with bauxite
Thick smoke of engine in mood
A rattling song of heart to soothe
A LOVELY RED FAT POKE
Red or pink is fat poke’s color
Sweet & satisfying is the taste
Grows wild in Guyana like no other
A lovely red fat poke wins that race
BORN FREE
Jungle floor welcomes early dawn
Supreme jaguar stretches & yawn
Prowling for breakfast to embrace
Rhythm of race & taste versus escape
POWIS-CRAX ALECTOR
Twirly, whirly, my curly head
To straighten or afro instead
Keeping up with the fashion
Twirly & curly is my passion
WEST BANK SUNSET
Setting sun at Demerara’s West Bank
Another day over and we give thanks
I can hear the river as the music floats
When the wind blows a whispering note
Blending time, song and color as one
Twilight of evening flame, day is done.
