Global research project 6:

Agroforestry Policy InitiativeDr Olu Ajayi will soon start full time on the agroforestry policy initiative with guidance from Frank Place.

Administratively GRP6 will facilitate this, with connections to all other GRP’s and all regions

A number of the regions will report exciting new initiatives in this domain

GRP6 Highlights_1Progress in

New buffer concept

GRP6 Highlights_3 Progress on drivers of tree cover change

Red above Bluemeans increasing deforestation rates

Strict -- Loose forest concept

Widening: area planted < area cleared Contracting: area planted > cleared

Tree cover transition

The schematic forest (or tree cover) transi‐tion can have a wide‐ning phase, when loss of natural forest exceeds tree planting and a contractingphase when the reverse is true.

?

In the 1990’s loss of natural cover increased the amount of ‘low C‐stock’ & low economic value land; tree (crop) planting was 28% of the loss of natural forest area

After 2000 planting of tree (crop)s equals 90% of concurrent loss of natural forest; the amount of low C‐stock & low economic value land decreases

In the CRP world, we will find our home in CRP6.3 (and CRP2)

Social Science CCER responseGRP6 is home to much of current

ICRAF social science, with focus on

•‘Rights & resource access’/ tenure•Multiple knowledge systems &

K2A•Fairness vs Efficiency at multiple

scales

GRP6 in relation to Science Q

•GRP6/SEA + EA is well repre-sented in ICRAF’s track record of publications and multi-me-dia approaches to communi-cation to varied audiences

•Several new PhD’s

M a s w a r

CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2) AND METHANE (CH4) EMISSION OF OIL PALM PLANTATIONS ON

PEAT LAND IN W. ACEH

ETIK PUJI HANDAYANI

GRP Funding pipeline• Both RUPES and PRESA are reaching end,

discussions with SEA and EA ongoing for follow-up negotiations with IFAD

• EU policy funding ended; revival possible?

• Large Sulawesi project (9 M CAD) just approved

• Finland/Waf still pending• Effective link with ASB/REALU as key to• varied project portfolio

Specific issues for BOT discussion

•The sentinel landscape approach is close to our GRP6 heart and essential for regional involvement, but progress has been slower than we hoped (to be updated after Naivasha CRP6.1 & 6.3 meeting)
