2013 Milfoil Update –The Fight Continues!by Kent Davidson

2013 was another busy year fortreating milfoil. The DNR was late ingetting permits reviewed due to theunexpectedly poor weather. Wereceived our permit on July 12, where-as normally we are done treating inMay. EWM is much easier to identifyearlier in the spring, making ourapplication much more effective atthat time. The DNR had also dramati-cally reduced the acreage we couldtreat, so we had to set up a meetingwith them on the lake to prove wherewe had infected areas.

GLSA Public Access Monitoring

Big Investment,Big Success!by Chuck Lingen

In May, GLSA entered into a ServiceAgreement with Anchor Dock & Lift(AD&L) whereby AD&L would hire andmanage a team of DNR trained water-craft monitors at the Lake Sylvia publicaccess during the 2013 boating season. The purpose of this Service Agreement(now called Public Access Monitor pro-gram) is to assist GLSA in preventingthe introduction of new Aquatic InvasiveSpecies (AIS), such as zebra mussels, into Lake Sylvia.

IntroducingYour NewGLSAPresident

On June 1, 2003 I was elect-ed as President of the GLSA. Iam honored to be serving asyour President and am pleasedto work with the GLSA Boardand all of the volunteers whoare so important to this organi-zation.

My wife Nancy (Pattee)Hector firstintroducedme to LakeSylvia in1974 whenwe begandating, and Iwas trulysmitten - byboth the girland the lake.In 1986, webought acabin on the west lake andspent most weekends packingup the car and the kids anddriving from our house to thecabin. We marveled at theclear water, waking up with theloons and fishing, skiing, swim-ming and most of all sharingthis wonderful lake with ourfamily.

As our children grew andbecame more involved in schooland sports - we sold our cabinand spent more of our time onLake Minnetonka - but stillcame to Lake Sylvia at least

once a year to visit the Patteeclan. In 2008, when ouryoungest daughter left for col-lege, we fulfilled a dream and

moved backto LakeSylvia fulltime.

Nancy andI have bothbeen activein the GLSAbecause wetreasure thislake so much.Through ourinvolvement

in the lake association, we havemet many friends and haveenjoyed working to maintainand protect and improve thequality of this great resource.

Throughout my term, I willwork to meet our current chal-lenges (Zebra Mussels), buildupon our successful programs(CLP, Milfoil) and build anorganization that is able tomeet the future needs of thislake community. I look forwardto meeting and hearing fromyou. Thank you for your contin-ued support of the GLSA!

A Few Words From Your PresidentChris Hector

‘We marveled at theclear water, waking upwith the loons and fishing, skiing, swimmingand most of all sharingthis wonderful lake withour family.’

Three areas popped up ashotspots this year. Although wehave been very effective in elimi-nating EWM on the south side ofMidget Bay, we treated numerousnew plants in the southwest cornerof the bay. The second area toflare up was on the north end ofWest Lake, west from LighthousePoint where there is a privateaccess. We were very disappointedto identify a large number of mil-foil plants at that location. Thethird area of infestation that hascontinued to be a thorn in our sideis 100-150 yards directly east ofthe public access and certain partsof Shootin’ Holler.

There are other, smaller pocketsof the plants at various locationsaround the West lake. The goodnews is that we have not yet foundany plants in the East lake. Wealso used fewer chemicals to treatthan last year, but I think thatwas due to our late start.

Hopefully, next year we will returnto an earlier treatment period.

I want to thank John Swansonand Dick Anderson for their yearsof undying devotion to killing mil-foil. John is transitioning thoseduties to me, and I will go on

killing milfoil with the help ofRuss Fortner and Blaine Barkley. We call ourselves the MilfoilMongrels, and our motto is, “Weeat it up!”

Thank you for your continuingcontributions and support!

Monitoring from page 1

While the primary objective ofthe program is to observe andinspect incoming watercraft at theLake Sylvia public access, a sec-ondary objective is to gather infor-mation on the watercrafts throughinterview questions and observa-tion and submit the data gatheredto GLSA via mini iPads. An enor-mous amount of data has been col-lected during the 2013 boating sea-son. Over 2500 watercraft wereobserved and data for each waslogged by the monitors as of earlySeptember. This data will be ana-lyzed upon completion of the sea-son and the resulting information

will be used to help manage andimprove this same program in2014.

The monitoring services byAD&L commenced on May 11,2013 and will continue through

September 29, 2013 covering 117days and aggregating approximate-ly 1400 total hours. The total costof the Public Access Monitor pro-gram will be approximately$25,000 for the year of 2013.

This year the Public AccessMonitor Program was totally fund-ed by GLSA. GLSA’s goal for 2014is to apply for and receive DNRgrant(s) to help subsidize the costof an on-going monitoring pro-gram. The data/information gath-ered by the Public Access Monitorsduring 2013 season will greatlyassist and improve our chances ofreceiving a subsidy in 2014.

‘Over 2,500 watercraftwere observed anddata for each waslogged by the monitors as of earlySeptember.’
